Mangaluru, Sept 29: The Second Judicial Magistrate First Class Court on Thursday took cognisance of a private complaint against B. Ramanath Rai, Minister of Forest, Ecology and Environment.
The vice-president of the State unit of BJP Minority Morcha Rahim Uchil had filed a private complaint accusing Mr. Rai of defaming Yuva Brigade leader Chakavarthi Sulibele during his speech at a Congress party convention in Asaiguli on September 22.
Rai had allegedly mispronounced Sulibele as “Soole-Bele”, meaning “a prostitute’s price” in the meeting. Rai also had r called Sulibele an “antinational”.
After hearing a detailed argument by Mr. Uchil’s counsel S.S. Khazi on Thurasday, Magistrate Santosh Kunder S. passed a six-page order taking cognisance of the complaint accusing Mr. Rai of offences under Sections 500 (defamation) and 504 (insult to provoke breach of peace) of the IPC.
The Magistrate has posted the case to October 10 for recording of Mr. Uchil and other witnesses’ statement.
