Sunanda Pushkar's post-mortem begins at AIIMS; Shashi Tharoor out of hospital

January 18, 2014

Sunanda_PushkarNew Delhi, Jan 18: Union minister Shashi Tharoor, who had checked into the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) soon after his wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a south Delhi hotel on Friday night, has been discharged after the doctors said he was fine.

Tharoor had complained of uneasiness and chest pain. He was initially admitted to the ICU and was later shifted to a private ward when his condition stabilised. Doctors treating him said he was suffering from hypertension and palpitations and was feeling giddy.

On Saturday morning, Tharoor was discharged. A spokesman of the hospital said, “Everything is normal. The chest pain is normal now and his condition is stable”.

In the meanwhile, a panel of doctors of AIIMS is carrying out post-mortem on Sunanda’s body, which had been brought in on Friday night. Dr DK Sharma, medical superintendent of the hospital, had said the post-mortem would begin after the police submitted inquest report.

The process is likely to end by 2pm and a preliminary report is expected to be submitted later in the day. “But it depends on how clear the findings are. If the medical examination is not conclusive, we will have to wait for the lab reports," Dr Sharma told a news channel.

Police are probing accidental overdose of blood pressure pills as a possible reason behind Sunanda, sources said on Saturday.

Sunanda Pushkar’s creation would held in Delhi’s Lodhi Road crematorium, said Abhinav Kumar, private secretary to the minister. It is likely to take place at around 4pm Saturday.

Earlier, there were reports that body would be brought to Trivandrum, the minister’s constituency, for cremation.

Sunanda, the 52-year-old wife of the Union minister, was found dead on late on Friday at a seven-star hotel in Delhi where the couple had checked in a day earlier.

News of Sunanda's death emerged late on Friday evening, two days after her Twitter spat with a Pakistani journalist over an alleged affair with the minister.

"We will seek information from Twitter about any direct messages exchanged between Sunanda and others," said a police officer investigating the case.

Police sources also said that there was a minor altercation between Sunanda and the minister before they moved into the hotel.

They said that no suicide note was found and it could be possible that Sunanda died of tuberculosis which was diagnosed recently.

Sources also added that she died at least four hours before her body was recovered in the suite bedroom and said rigor mortis suggested that Sunanda died of a possible heart attack.

Sunanda was found dead in the bedroom of The Leela Palace suite number 345 around 8.15pm.

Meanwhile, PTI reported that Sunanda's body was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for post-mortem examination early on Saturday.

The autopsy would be carried out around 12pm by a team of doctors and the report could be available later in the evening, the news agency said.

Pushkar and Tharoor were at the centre of a raging controversy when reports emerged that she was upset over reported text and tweet messages between her husband and Mehr Tarar.

A joint statement from the couple on Thursday said that they were "happily married" but distressed by "some unauthorised tweets".

The aircraft, a C-17 Globemaster, was sent to Tehran on Monday evening.

About 2,000 Indians are living in Iran, a country that has witnessed increasing numbers of coronavirus cases in the last few days.

"The IAF aircraft has landed. Mission completed. On to the next," External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted.

In an earlier tweet, he said, "First batch of 58 Indian pilgrims being brought back from Iran. IAF C-17 taken off from Tehran and expected to land soon in Hindon."

"Thanks to the efforts of our Embassy @India_in_Iran and Indian medical team there, operating under challenging conditions. Thank you @IAF_MCC. Appreciate cooperation of Iranian authorities. We are working on the return of other Indians stranded there (sic)," Jaishankar added.

The aircraft landed at Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, from where the passengers were take to a medical facility.

According to latest reports, 237 people have died of novel coronavirus in Iran while the number of positive cases stands at around 7,000.

It is the second such evacuation by the C-17 Globemaster in the last two weeks.

On February 27, 76 Indians and 36 foreign nationals were brought back from the Chinese city of Wuhan by the aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

The C-17 Globemaster is the largest military aircraft in the IAF's inventory. The plane can carry large combat equipment, troops and humanitarian aid across long distances in all weather conditions.

Four days ago, a Mahan airline plane brought swab samples of 300 Indians from Iran to India.

New Delhi, Jul 30: Even as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in various parts of India, more than 1 million people have recovered and discharged till now, informed Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health, here on Thursday.

"More than 1 million people have recovered from COVID-19 in the country. This landmark recovery has been achieved because of the selfless work and dedication of our doctors, nurses and frontline workers," Bhushan said at a press conference.

Giving the number of cured persons, Bhushan said, "More than 1,020,000 patients have recovered. They have been discharged. It is a great achievement."

He said, "The recovery rate has shown positive trends. It was 7.85 per cent in April and today it is 64.4 per cent, which is another heartening news which tells us that whatever battle is put by the Union government in collaboration with state governments is showing results."

"Sixteen states of the country have a recovery rate that is more than the national average. Of these, Delhi has a recovery rate of 88 per cent, Ladakh 80 per cent, Haryana 78 per cent, Assam 76 per cent, Telangana 74 per cent, Tamil Nadu & Gujarat 73 per cent, Rajasthan 70 per cent, Madhya Pradesh 69 per cent and Goa 68 per cent," Bhushan said.

He said effective clinical management lead to a decrease in case fatality rate. In June it was 3.33 per cent and now 2.21 per cent.

Bhushan said the case fatality rate in India today is 2.21 per cent and it's among the lowest in the world. Twenty-four states and Union Territories have lesser fatality rate than that of the country.

Herd immunity in a country of the size and population of India can not be a strategic option. It can only be achieved through immunisation.

"Over 18,190,000 tests have been conducted in the country including RT-PCR and rapid antigen tests. There has been a week-on-week increase in average tests per day. India is conducting 324 test per 10 lakhs population per day," Bhushan said.

He added, three vaccine candidates, are in phase 3 clinical trial. These three are in the US, UK and China. In India, two indigenously developed vaccine candidates are in phase I and II of clinical trials.

Trial of the first vaccine involves 1,150 subjects at eight sites, second on 1,000 subjects at five sites.
