Mumbai, Sep 5: Days after Union Ministry of Home Affairs suspend a Joint Secretary and his subordinates for the online renewal of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA) licence of Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik's NGO, the colleagues of the victims petitioned Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi to convey that great injustice had been done to the honest officers.zakir-naik

The Joint Secretary, G.K. Dwivedi, a 1993 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre was suspended along with two Under Secretaries and a section officer on September 2 for alleged dereliction of duty.

One of the officers Kumar Alok who met the Home Secretary said, “We rate him as an officer of highest level of integrity, he has implemented so many projects including the merger of PIO-OIC card that was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Madison Square in U.S in 2014.”

Another official said that the online system, through which Dr. Naik's NGO — the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) licence was renewed does not have any provisions for “red-flagged” NGOs.

“There is no manual interface. While the red flagging is manual, the renewal of licence is electronic. Great injustice has been done to him but we believe in the system that it will be corrected,” said a senior home ministry official.

It is learnt that Mr. Dwivedi had written on several occasions to the National Informatics Centre, the government's web services organisation to upgrade the software to reflect the NGOs, which had adverse reports against them or had been sent inspection notices.

“He is a victim of his own reforms. This online system to weed out corruption from FCRA wing was spearheaded by him. Had everything been renewal, this goof up would have never happened,” said another official.

Dr. Naik's IRF was sent an inspection notice on August 8 and the automatic renewal of licence was done on August 19. Another official said that one of the suspended Under Secretary — Deepak Kumar had also sought transfer from the FCRA wing on several occasions owing to the risks involved with the division.

The Home Ministry had switched to an online renewal system for FCRA registered NGOs earlier this year and the idea was to reduce the human interface after several complained of bribes sought by officials to renew their licences.

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed.

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Mangaluru, Feb 26: The 'Yakshagana' stage in Karnataka is witnessing a curious spectacle with a Muslim woman artiste creating waves with her performances.

Arshiya, the artiste from Vittal in Dakshina Kannada district, is the first woman from the Muslim community to venture into the popular traditional theatre art form.

At one time, women were barred from Yakshagana stages.

A Muslim woman exponent on stage has attracted the attention of 'Yakshagana' lovers in the state.

Arshiya is now getting advanced training in her skills at the Kadali Kala Kendra under Ramesh Bhat here.

Arshiya, who is fond of 'Bannada Vesha' (villain roles), is now known in her stage name 'Tanu Vitla.'

She has already performed various episodes on stage and gained popularity.

Arshiya, currently working in an automobile showroom at Padil, said she was attracted to the art form from a very young age.

The initial enchantment with the art form came as she saw the role of Mahishasura in 'Sri Devi Mahatme Yakshagana Prasanga' (episode) performed near her home town.

She was attracted to all the elements of the art form, which combines music, percussion, dance, dialogues, stage techniques, make-up and costume.

Arshiya said she was also inspired by a teacher in her school at Vittal who trained her for a performance on stage during the school's annual day celebration.

She started performing on local stages at Vittal at the very young age of 10.

Arshiya now performs prominent roles on stage including Mahishasura in Sri Devi Mahatme Prasanga, the role which enamoured her in her childhood.

She also has donned the roles of Nishambhasura, Rakthabeejasura, Srinivas Kalyana, Sudarshanopakyana, Kadamba Kaushike and Shambavi Vijaya.

Her performances at Udupi and Karwar besides Mangaluru have earned her a lot of admirers, who love her 'Asura' roles, thanks to her loud voice.

Arshiya now wants to learn the 'Chende' (percussion instrument), which is an important element in Yakshagana performances.

Arshiya revealed that there was a bit of resistance from her community about her passion for the art form, but she had staunch backing of her family.
