Swami Vivekananda had refused to join cow protection outfits: DK leader

Chennai, Mar 6: Taking strong exception to the Maharashtra government’s ban on beef, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani on Thursday said eating habits are the fundamental rights of an individual and no government has a right to decide on them.

swamyDescribing the move as ‘anti-Constitutional and anti-secular’, he said a majority of the people in the world eat beef and it was a nutritious diet available at a cheaper rate to the poor. Religious chauvinism should not deprive people of their fundamental right, he asserted.

The beef ban, he alleged, was part of the ruling party’s Hindutva policy and not based on the principle of ahimsa, as meat of a particular animal that is considered sacred had been banned. “If giving milk is the criteria, what about buffaloes that too produce milk? Why are buffaloes not protected?” he asked.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda’s views on protecting cows, the DK leader said feeding the hungry people was more important than protecting cows or any other animal. The revered saint had also refused to join an organisation to protect cows, saying that he would not join such organisations that give heaps of food to birds and animals without sympathy for human beings.

Eating beef was an ancient custom and part of several yagnas cited in Vedas, he said and added that it was mentioned in Valmiki’s Ramayana. The DK was prepared to start a propaganda in favour of beef by arranging beef feasts like it did in 1972, Veeramani said, adding that the ban should be challenged in court.

Echoing him, Socialist Democratic Party of India leader Tehelan Bhakavi said beef was consumed by the poor who were involved in physical labour. He added that eating beef was an ancient custom found in the Ramayana and other Puranas.

Managluru, May 15: Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia deserve more attention from the government amidst covid-19 crisis as they remit huge amount of money to their home state and ultimately get no benefit, opined U T Khader, Mangaluru MLA.

The former minister held a video conference with stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia on May 15 and assured to do his best to convince the Centre to operate more repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka.

He also said that he would urge the chief minister of Karnataka to announce a separate rehabilitation package for Indian expatriates who have lost their jobs in Gulf countries amidst covid-19 lockdown.

Mr Khader also interacted with two medical emergency patients and promised them to inform the Indian embassy in Riyadh to facilitate their homeward journey via Dammam-Bengaluru flight in the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission.

Mr Khader expressed regret over the inept handling of passengers from Dubai at Mangaluru International Airport on May 12 and said that next batch of passengers would not face such problems on arrival.

Mysuru, May 1: Four people who brought a dead man’s body from Mumbai for cremation in his native place in Mandya district in Karnataka have tested positive for Covid-19 virus, and now the administration is trying to find out if the man himself had been an undetected positive.

According to Mandya district deputy commissioner M V Venkatesh, the deceased man was a 53-year-old native of B Kodagalli of Pandavapura taluk, Melkote hobli in Mandya district. He died after suffering a heart attack at the U N Desai government hospital in Mumbai on April 23.

The cremation took place outside the man's native village after the local administration refused to allow it inside the village.

Wanting the final rites performed in his native place, the man’s family got the body embalmed and procured all the medical records and certificates from the hospital and brought it in an ambulance belonging to the Desai government hospital.

When they reached Pandavapura taluk in Karnataka on the evening of April 24, the local administration did not allow the body to enter the village but allowed the relatives to cremate it outside the village.

And since the family had come from Mumbai, the district administration quarantined all seven of the man’s relatives, and their samples were sent for testing on 28 April.

The results showed that the deceased man’s 25-year-old son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and two-year-old grandchild are positive for Covid 19. All of them have been admitted at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences although they have no symptoms.

Deputy commissioner Venkatesh said that in the Desai hospital records in Mumbai there was no mention whether or not the man had been tested for Covid-19. “We are writing to Desai hospital to clarify if the deceased person was tested for Covid 19. It is also possible that the family got infected by the man’s son who works in the loan department of ICICI Bank in Mumbai and visits several offices in different areas of Mumbai,” he said.

The man’s ancestral B Kodagalli village now has been sealed off. Though tests done on other members of the family have come back negative, the Mandya administartions plans to repeat their tests.

So far 26 people have tested positive for Covid 19 in Mandya district.
