'Tainted' men in Cong second list; Pawan Kumar Bansal gets Chandigarh

Pawan_KumarNew Delhi, Mar 14: Backing its “tainted” leaders, the Congress on Thursday announced that former Union ministers Subodhkant Sahai and Pawan Kumar Bansal would contest the Lok Sabha elections from Ranchi and Chandigarh respectively, while Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily would be fielded from Chikkaballapur.

After the party’s Central Election Committee meeting, spread over two days, the Congress released a list of 71 candidates, including four replacements.

The second list featured a number of youth leaders, including Rizwan Arshad (Bangalore Central), Youth Congress president Rajeev Satav (Hingoli, Maharashtra), Dean Kuriakose (Idukki) and Hamdullah Sayeed (Lakshadweep).

The Congress rejected allegations of corruption against Bansal and Sahai, contending that they were perceived as tainted, but there were no cases against them. Congress sources said Arvind Kejriwal’s allegations against Moily were not the reasons for withholding his name in the first list of candidates announced last week.

Bansal resigned as the railway minister after his nephew Vijay Singla was arrested by the CBI, allegedly for accepting a bribe to influence appointments to the Railway Board. Sahai’s name figured in the coal scam.

The Congress re-nominated a number of Union ministers, including Shashi Tharoor (Thiruvananthapuram), V Narayanasamy (Puducherry), L Suresh (Mavelikkara), K V Thomas (Ernakulam), Mullapally Ramachandran (Vadakara), K C Venugopal (Alappuzha) and Vincent Pala (Shillong).

Kanpur, Jan 18: Kanpur has witnessed an Unnao-like incident as the out on bail accused in rape case attack the family members of the victim. The mother of the victim, who later died in the hospital, was brutally attacked by the accused. The accused reportedly attacked the victim's mother and her aunt on January 8.

The actual rape case goes back to 2018 when a group of men abducted a minor girl from her own society. The accused had reportedly raped her and also beaten up her mother.

A video of mother being beaten up reportedly went viral soon after.

The mother of the victim had reportedly filed a complaint against one of the accused for abducting and molesting her daughter two years ago at a tannery falling under jurisdiction of Chakeri police station. The main accused along with five others was booked under section 354 of the IPC (sexual assault of children) and sent to jail. Around two weeks ago, the accused got bail and on January 9 they attacked the deceased and her sister.

Pathanamthitta, Aug 9 : An orange alert has been issued in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district as the water level in Pamba dam is now flowing at 983.05 metres and it is likely to reach 983.50 metres within an hour.

A red alert will be declared at 984.5 metres and dam will open when the water level reaches 985 metres.

"The water level in Pamba dam is 983.05 metres now and is likely to reach 983.50 metres within an hour. So, the second alert- orange alert has been issued. A red alert will be declared at 984.5 metres and dam will open when it reaches 985 metres," said Pathanamthitta District Collector.

Meanwhile, a portion of the Shiva Temple in Aluva continues to remain submerged. However, the water level in the Periyar River is receding gradually and more part of the temple is above the water level now. 

As Kerala has been receiving heavy rain for the past few days, severe waterlogging affects traffic movement at Mannuthy bypass in Thrissur on Saturday.

On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert in Kozhikode district. It had also predicted rainfall in different parts of the state.

Due to heavy downpour, a massive landslide had occurred in Idukki district recently. The death toll in Idukki landslide has risen to 26, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said that monsoon fury continues to be severe in the state.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 29: Kerala Excise department has organized a Tik-Tok competition as part of its drug addiction-free mission.

The contest will be on the effects of drug addiction on people and society. The winner goes will go home with an I-Pad as a prize.

The competition is being organised as part of the Department's intensive campaign titled "Tomorrow's Kerala, Drug and Addiction-free Kerala".

"Those taking part should post the video from their profile with the hashtag #vimukthikerala. Each contestant can post more than one video. They can challenge friends with #vimukthichallenge. The last date of receiving them is March 5," said the spokesperson of the Excise Department.

The number of likes a video gets, its theme and presentation will be the criteria on which the video will be judged.

"As soon as a video is posted on Tik-Tok, it should also be sent on the WhatsApp number 9072588222," added the spokesperson of the Excise Department.
