Teary farewell to Prince Saud

Makkah, Jul 12: The funeral prayer for former Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal was held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, in the presence of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, on Saturday night.

Representatives from a number of countries and high-ranking royals attended the prayer, held after Isha.

King Salman received Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Bahraini Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al-Khalifa, who offered their condolences on the death of Prince Saud to the king, in Makkah.

The king received a telephone call from Egyptian President Abdul Fattah El-Sissi, who expressed sorrow over the demise of Prince Saud.

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Chaooh Ihsanoglu, Algerian Parliament Speaker Abdul Qader bin Saleh, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra and Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, representative of the Ruler in the Western Region of the UAE, arrived in Jeddah on Saturday to condole with the king over the death of the veteran diplomat.

Meanwhile, Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman offered his condolences to King Salman on Prince Saud’s death.

Prince Faisal sent a letter to King Salman on behalf of the people of Madinah, saying that Prince Saud had spent his life to serve the nation for 40 years.

Prince Saud, who died in Los Angeles on Thursday, was the world’s longest-serving foreign minister and oversaw four decades of diplomacy for the Kingdom.

In a separate development, King Salman opened the third phase of the Grand Mosque expansion in Makkah, Al-Arabiya reported.

Dubai, May 19: In a heart-warming decision to reunite families that have been split by anti-Covid travel restrictions, the UAE has announced that residents with valid visas stranded outside the country can return from June 1.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship said they will begin the process on Monday, June 1, by allowing the return of those residency holders currently stranded outside the country who have relatives in the UAE. Residents who meet this criteria must apply for a Resident Entry Permit on smartservices.ica.gov.ae.

The ministry and the authority said the decision was taken to reunite families that have been affected by the anti-coronavirus measures taken due to the exceptional circumstances.

"The UAE is keen to facilitate the procedures for holders of UAE residency visas who are stuck outside the country and reunite them with their families who were affected by the precautionary measures taken by the country in light of the current exceptional circumstances to combat Covid-19," the federal authorities were quoted by state news agency Wam.

Hundreds of UAE residents are currently stuck abroad and are separated from their families due to the unexpected freeze on air travel imposed by many countries as precautionary measures to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The #BringBackUAEresidents hashtag was trending on Twitter on Monday as several residents and families requested the government to expedite their return to the UAE.

Beirut, Aug 7: A devastating explosion that destroyed much of Beirut might have been the result of a missile attack or bomb, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said, as the death toll from the blast rose to 154.

More than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate had been sitting in a port warehouse for six years, but there have been conflicting accounts about why Lebanese authorities decided to empty the shipment of explosive material. The vessel carrying the flammable cargo was heading from Georgia to Mozambique when it stopped in the Lebanese port to load up on iron, according to the ship’s captain.

By Friday, 19 suspects had been arrested and Lebanon’s former director general of customs Chafic Merhy had been questioned by military police.

Abu Dhabi, Apr 21: The UAE has reported a further 490 new coronavirus infections, after conducting more than 30,000 new tests, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients to 7,755.

According to the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), three more coronavirus deaths have been confirmed, taking to 46 the country’s death toll.

The ministry revealed that it conducted more than 30,000 additional COVID-19 tests among UAE citizens and residents, using state-of-the-art technology in line with its plans to intensify virus screening in order to bring COVID-19 under control.

The accelerated investigative measures resulted in the detection of 490 new coronavirus cases among various nationalities, all of whom are in a stable condition and receiving the necessary care.

The deceased are of Asian nationalities and had pre-existing conditions coinciding with being infected with coronavirus, which resulted in complications that led to their death.

The ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to all patients, calling on the public to cooperate with health authorities and comply with all precautionary measures, particularly social distancing protocols, to ensure the safety and protection of the public.

The ministry also announced the full recovery of 83 new cases after receiving the necessary treatment, taking to 1443 the total of those now recovered from the virus in the UAE.
