Technician gets sucked into Air India plane engine, dies

Mumbai, Dec 16: In a freak accident, an aircraft technician died after being sucked into the engine of an Air India (AI) aircraft during pushback at the Mumbai airport on Wednesday evening.

airindiaThe mishap occurred when the co-pilot of Mumbai-Hyderabad Flight 619 mistook a signal for starting the engine and the victim, Ravi Subramanian, who was standing close, got sucked into it. The incident occurred at Bay 28 of the domestic airport around 8:40 pm.

Investigation on

Confirming the incident, AI CMD Ashwani Lohani said the incident is being investigated.

“During the pusback, the co-pilot mistook a signal for engine start. As he switched on the engine, it sucked in the technician standing nearby,” AI sources said. The body was mangled beyond recognition.

Top officials of AI, Mumbai airport, CISF and Mumbai Police rushed to the spot. Lohani said he was deeply saddened by the tragic incident. “We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident at Mumbai airport this evening when an Air India technician died in a mishap during pushback of flight AI 619. The incident is being investigated. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” Lohani said. Experts said they have not heard of such an incident.

Karwar, Mar 19: Four drug peddlers were arrested on Thursday and 2.68 Kg of brown sugar worth Rs 2 Crore was seized from them while they were smuggling the banned drug by road from Yellapura to Ankola.

Police identified the arrested persons as Narayan (35), Chandrahas Gunaga (29), Veerabhadra Hegade (43) and Praveen Bhat (30).

Police have registered a case and investigations are ongoing.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: After the visit of fact finding committee members to the spot, the Christian community here decided to submit a report to the state government urging to install a 114-ft. statue of Jesus Christ at Kapala Betta in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagaram district, Congress MLC Ivan D’souza said here on Thursday.

While talking to media, Mr D’souza said the committee would submit the report to Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Revenue Minster R. Ashok and urge the government to construct the statue at the earliest.

The RSS and other BJP outfits have strongly opposed the installation, following which the government ordered suspension of the work. A few days ago, Kalladka Prabhakar, RSS ideologue, took out a rally in Kanakapura opposing the installation.

Belgaum, Mar 30: As many as 2442 labourers hailing from Karnataka have been brought back in 62 buses by the State government from Maharashtra on Sunday, in the backdrop of nation-wide lockdown following COVID-19 outbreak.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday urged migrant labourers not to leave the State owing to the nationwide lockdown and assured that the Maharashtra government will look after their interests.

Hundreds of migrants, a majority of whom are daily wage workers started rushing to their native places from different states amid uncertainty over their livelihood following the announcement of a 21-day nationwide lockdown by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week in order to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.
