Hyderabad, May 29: The day-long shutdown called by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday protesting the Centre’s ordinance to hand over 200 villages of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh for Polavaram irrigation project, affected normal life.

Buses of state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) went off the roads in all 10 districts including Hyderabad. Shops, hotels and business establishments were also shutdown in many parts of Telangana.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders sat in protest outside the RTC depots since early on Thursday to prevent buses from coming out.

Bus services from Hyderabad to various destinations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were suspended. The city services of the RTC in Hyderabad and Secunderabad were also hit, causing inconvenience to commuters.

The Board of Intermediate Education postponed advanced supplementary examinations of 11th and 12th standards scheduled on Thursday.

The Telangana Chief Minister-designate called the shutdown to protest an ordinance issued by the Centre to transfer 205 villages of Khammam district of Telangana to adjoining state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Chief Minister-designate has termed the ordinance as unconstitutional and said the Centre can’t take such a step without consulting the two states, which will formally come into being on June 2.

A complete shutdown was being observed in Khammam district, especially in Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions. About two lakh people, mostly tribals, who inhibit the villages are strongly opposing the Centre’s move, which is said to be aimed at avoiding an interstate dispute over the project coming up across Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh.

The construction of the project is likely to submerge the villages and to avoid any interstate dispute, they are being merged with Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister elect N. Chandrababu Naidu has asked his Telangana counterpart to avoid politicising Polavaram project and making provocative statements.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief wanted to know why TRS president Mr. Rao kept quiet when the previous government announced national status to Polavaram and also declared that the villages would be merged with Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Naidu said he would extend full cooperation to Telangana if Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao focused on the development of the new state.

Lucknow, Jan 6: Undeterred by the large scale protests that claimed as many as 20 lives in the state, Uttar Pradesh government has started the process of implementing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

According to sources in the government, the district magistrates have been directed to identify the migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who have been living in their districts.

Sources said that the state home department has given oral instructions to the district magistrates. ''No written orders have been issued,'' said a senior official here preferring anonymity.

The official said that the district magistrates would be preparing a list containing names of those minorities, who had migrated from these countries following their persecution and had been living without obtaining the citizenship of India.

According to sources, the government expected that the migrants, who could be eligible for the Indian citizenship in accordance with the CAA, could be more in number in the districts, including Rampur, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow and some others.

''The list will be sent to the union home ministry,'' the official added.

Sources said that the state government will also inform the centre about the ''illegal Muslim migrants'' for their ultimate deportation to their countries of origin.

Different parts of UP had witnessed large scale violence last month during the protests against the CAA. At least 20 people, mostly youngsters, were killed allegedly in police firing and many others were injured. The state government had denied the charge.

Alleged police excesses during and after the protests triggered a nationwide outrage with several rights organisations and activists slamming the BJP government and demanding a high-level probe into the allegations.

Lukung, Jul 17: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday assured that not an inch of our land can be taken by any power in the world while he interacted with the Indian Army and ITBP personnel at Lukung.

Referring to the India-China border standoff, he said, "Talks are underway to resolve the border dispute but to what extent it can be resolved I cannot guarantee. I can assure you, not one inch of our land can be taken by any power in the world."

Emphasising on finding a diplomatic solution to the standoff, he further said, "If a solution can be found by talks, there is nothing better."
"Recently what happened between troops of India and China at PP14, how some of our personnel sacrificed their lives protecting our border. I am happy to meet you all but also saddened because of their loss. I pay my tributes to them," he added.

Singh interacted with the Army and Paramilitary troops here along with Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane.

Earlier today, the Defence Minister witnessed para dropping and scoping weapons here. He also inspected a Pika machine gun.

Indian Army T-90 tanks and BMP infantry combat vehicles carried out the exercise at Stakna, Leh in presence of Singh, Chief of Defence Staff and Army Chief.

Defence Minister is on a two-day visit to Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. He will take stock of the situation at both the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LOC).

While Pakistan constantly violates ceasefire from across the LoC, China has continued to intrude into Indian territory in Ladakh region in recent past, escalating tensions between India and its eastern neighbour.

On June 15, twenty Indian soldiers laid out their lives during combat with Chinese forces in Galwan valley, leading to tensions between both nations. Chinese soldiers subsequently started moving back following dialogues between two countries through the military level and diplomatic level.

Singh was accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane.
