Tension in Mangaluru as bandh follows Bantwal violence; Sec 144 for 3 days

Mangaluru, Nov 13: Prohibitory orders have been clamped and a holiday has been declared for educational institutions on Friday in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district after violence erupted in Bantwal taluk on Thursday evening.

One youth was stabbed to death another one was critically injured in attack by unidentified miscreants in Bantwal on Thursday night, hours after alleged Sangh Parivar activists pelted stones at SDPI protesters in BC Road. It is suspected that the murder was committed only to disrupt the peace in the society.

Meanwhile, the Dakshina Kannada units of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal that have earlier planned to stage protests across the district on Friday in the pretext of Madikeri violence, called for a sudden bandh.

A tense atmosphere prevailed in Mangaluru city too as miscreants forcefully imposed bandh in some parts. Most of the shops, hotels and other business establishments remained closed on Friday.

Anticipating trouble, the district administration has clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 throughout the district for the next three days, starting November 13.

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim has also declared holiday for schools and colleges across the district.

As many as 1,000 additional police personnel including RAF have been called to as part of precautionary measures in the district. More details are awaited.

Sporadic violnece

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from different parts of Mangaluru and neighbouring taluks since last night.

Miscreants pelted stones at stationary buses near Pumpwell Circle. At least four buses were damaged in the attack. Two other buses were stoned near Mudipu under the limits of Ullal police station.

In some parts of the city police personnel forced the shop keepers to close their shops in the morning as part of precautionary measures.

“Nakabandi has been imposed and if the people violate our orders, then appropriate action will be taken as per the law,” said a senior police officer.

Karnataka govt to build Rs 200 crore pilgrim complexes at Tirumala

Tirupati, Jul 5: The Karnataka government will soon build a massive pilgrim amenities complex and marriage hall at Tirumala, the hill abode of Lord Venkateswara, at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, a temple official said here on Saturday.

The state would soon submit a blueprint for the construction of the Rs 200 crore mega complexes to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) that governs the hill shrine, the official said.

Consequently, based on the designs, TTD would construct the complexes with the given fund and after completion, they would be handed over to the Karnataka government, he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa would lay the foundation stone for the mammoth complexes on the hills some time next month, he said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is likely to take part in the programme, he added.

I was not in the car which met accident, says Mohammed Nalapad

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Mohammed Nalapad, son of Karnataka Congress MLA NA Harris, who allegedly rammed his sports car into vehicles and a kiosk, injuring 4, on Bellary road in Bengaluru on February 9, said that he was not in the car which met with the accident.

Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Ravikante Gowda told media, "Mohammed Nalapad appeared before the investigating officer today. He was arrested following interrogation. We are collecting evidence and will file a charge sheet shortly."

Nalapad is out on bail, in connection with the matter where he had assaulted a man in a pub in Bengaluru in 2018.

"I was not in the car which met with accident. I was travelling in a Lamborghini car which was moving ahead of the car. However, I called people to rescue the victims. We took them to the hospital and paid their hospital bill," said Mohammed Nalapad.

Karnataka BJP will soon witness large scale defection, predicts Siddaramaiah

Kalaburagi, Feb 24: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that dissatisfaction and unhappiness are rising among the local Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs and the party might soon witness large scale defection.

Addressing the media, Mr. Siddaramaiah said many of the BJP MLAs have openly expressed their disappointment and unhappiness with the BJPs high command and also with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's attitude towards them and they have said that they want to join the Congress at the earliest.
