Shivamogga, Sept 4: Security has been scaled up in Shivamogga in wake of clashes that erupted during the procession to immerse Ganesh idols in Srirama Nagar and Seegehatti localities in the city on Saturdaynight.
The police have arrested six persons on charge of assaulting a Bajrang Dal activist. According to police, a group of youth objected to the procession while it was passing through Seegehatti in the city. Soon another group opposed them and a verbal duel ensued between the two groups. Stones were thrown on the procession and Uday Rao, a Bajrang Dal activist was assaulted with clubs. He was shifted to McGann Hospital.
The Tunga Nagar police have booked a case under section 307(attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code against the six persons arrested in this connection.
In another incident, unidentified miscreants pelted stones at the procession at Seegehatti locality in the city in which a 12-year-old girl was injured.
Based on a complaint by the mother of the girl, a case has been booked with Doddapet police station against unidentified persons. The police have also questioned 20 youths suspected to be involved in the incident.
In wake of these incidents, the police took out a flag march on Sunday in sensitive areas of the city including MKK Road, K.R. Puram, Tunga Nagar, Tipu Nagar, Seegehatti, Ravivarma Street and Ilyas Nagar.
