Newsroom, Apr 28: Malegaon terror attack accused Pragya Thakur, whose recent offensive remarks against former Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare kicked up a controversy, does not even deserve a response, according to latter’s daughter Jui Navare.

After being named as the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal, Pragya Thakur, who is also a self-styled Sadhvi, had claimed that Karkare, who was leading the investigation in the Malegaon terror attack case, had died after she cursed him.

In an interview Navare, 38, who currently stays in United States, said she read about the statement made by the terror-accused BJP leader about her father on social media. “I do not want to dignify her or her statement. I only want to talk about Hemant Karkare. He was a role model and his name should be taken with dignity,” Navare said.

“He taught us that terrorism has no religion. No religion teaches anyone to kill each other… it’s the ideology that has to be defeated. In his life, in his 24-year career in the police, he helped everyone. Even in his death, he was trying to save his city, his country. He loved his uniform and placed it before us and before his own life. I just want everyone to remember that,” she said.

It could be recalled here that in October 2008, a month before the Mumbai terror attacks, the Maharashtra ATS under Karkare had arrested 11 people, including Thakur, in the 2006 Malegaon terror attack case.

Navare said her father was “completely occupied” with the (Malegaon) investigation and her mother always “feared for his life” because she “was very worried about the case and its implications”. Karkare’s wife died in 2014 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Kozhikode, Jun 14: A mosque in Kuttichira of Kozhikode has found a unique way to avoid crowding amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee that runs the mosque has started issuing smart cards to people for offering prayers and simultaneously encouraging social distancing.

"The committee has given smart cards with numbers to the people in the surroundings of the Masjid. One who enters the mosque premises has to rub their hands with sanitizers. They also have to tell their identity on camera. The automatic system has been put in place to save the address and phone number. Next time onwards they have to say their smart card number only so that other details will be automatically filled," said Muhammad Sajjad, who is part of the Mosque committee.

"The door of the mosque will open automatically after swiping the card. We have fit in a sensor on the doors. We have also made marks inside the mosque area so that people can abide by social distancing norm," he added.

A couple of days back the Kerala government has rolled out an order allowing the opening of places of worship, malls and restaurants from June 9 in strict accordance with guidelines and social distancing norms. As per the guidelines, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities should not visit any places of worship. Those with symptoms should not be allowed.
