Thieves target bank: 3.5 kg gold, cash stolen

Honnavar, July 19: Unidentified thieves broke into the Karki branch of Kanara District Central Cooperative Bank near here and made away with 3.5 kg of gold and a cash amount of Rs 1.96 lakh in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

Police sources said that the bank which is being run in a rented house has no security guards. Moreover, there was no alarm system inside the bank.

Bhatkal Deputy Superintendent of police M Narayana said that the thieves gained entry into the bank by breaking open the front shutter and doors.

“The thieves break open the strong room using the electric cutters. Then they broke open the steel cupboards and treasuries and took away the gold which was mortgaged by the customers,” he said.


Mr Narayana said that it appeared to be the handiwork of the professional gangs. However, he said that the negligence of the bank authorities was the main reason for theft.

He said that special teams were formed to nab the culprits.

Superintendent of police K T Balakrishna among other senior police officers visited the spot. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog squad were called in. A case has been registered at Honnavar police station.

Hubli, April 3: Twelve people including 5 women as well as 50 unidentified people have been booked for allegedly pelting stones at police personnel in Mantur area of Hubli on Friday.

The police were allegedly attacked for stopping people from offering Friday prayers at a mosque, during the ongoing lockdown put in place in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

"12 people including five women and 50 unidentified people have been booked for stone-pelting at police personnel in Mantur area of Hubli today. The women have been taken into custody while police are searching for the others," said Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner R Dilip.

The Police Commissioner further said, "Some prominent people of the community had also urged the devotees to go to their homes but they got agitated."

"Four policemen have sustained minor injuries in the incident," he said adding that "legal action will be taken against the culprits."

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and his daughter have been admitted to the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for observation after testing positive for COVID-19. The Chief Minister is in clinically stable condition.

"Karnataka Chief Minister has been admitted to the hospital for observation. He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team," Manipal Hospital said on Monday.
"His daughter has tested positive for COVID-19. She has been admitted to the hospital," added the hospital in another statement.

Yediyurappa had on Sunday tweeted that he had tested positive for COVID-19. The Chief Minister, 77, said he is fine and is being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," Yediyurappa wrote.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A 69-year-old man was murdered by his two sons at Muggaguthu in Karaya village under the limits of Uppinangady police station in Dakshina Kannada district. 

According to Police, accused Monappa Poojary (34) and Naveen (28) assaulted Dharnappa Poojary with sickle and wooden logs on Sunday night, leading to his on-the-spot death.

A family discord led to the murder, police said, adding that a case has been registered at Uppinangady police station and investigation was in progress.
