Those who sought leniency for Yakub Memon are nation's enemies: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Jul 31: Lashing out at those who sought leniency for Yakub Memon, the Shiv Sena today demanded they should be "tried for being enemies of the country" and also asked the government to ensure that the 1993 serial blasts convict does not become a martyr in the eyes of people.

shivsena The souls of all those affected by the 1993 bombings will be at peace only when its main conspirators and mastermind - Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim - are brought back to the country and sent to the gallows, the Sena said.

"Around 50 people had written letters asking for mercy to be shown towards Yakub Memon. These people had not lost anyone in the Mumbai attacks and were thus pleading for leniency. But, the President and the Supreme Court did not listen to them and dismissed their petitions keeping the sentiments of the country in mind," the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

"All those who asked for mercy to be shown towards Memon should be tried for being enemies of the country," it asserted.

"Memon has been hanged, and now government should take firm steps to ensure that no efforts are made to project him as innocent or martyr before the people," the Sena demanded.

The Mumbai serial blasts was an attack on the country by Pakistan, the Sena said and added that the neighbouring country has long been planning terror strikes against India.

"Dawood and Tiger are in Pakistan. Yakub too ran away to Pakistan and returned later. What is the point in showing mercy just because he came back to India? There was strong proof against him and his lawyer tried his best to save him," the editorial said.

The ruling alliance partner also suggested a debate on the fate of the killers of ex-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh still living despite being awarded death sentence.

"One point which (Asaduddin) Owaisi made is worth thinking about. The killers of former PM Rajiv Gandhi and ex-CM Beant Singh are living after being given death sentences because the respective state governments are against their killing," it said.

"There can be a discussion on this and legal battle can also be fought. But only on these grounds mercy cannot be granted to someone responsible for hundreds of deaths in the Mumbai bomb blasts," the Sena said.

Indian Army officer, two soldiers killed as China turns violent in Ladakh

New Delhi, June 16: Tensions along the Line of Control border between India and China have spiked with an Indian army officer and two soldiers killed in the Galwan area of Ladakh, the Indian army said in a statement on Tuesday.

This is the first time in decades that a clash involving casualties has taken place on the 3,488 kilometre border between India and China.

"During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation," said an official statement.

The two sides had made headway in talks last week with army chief General MM Naravane saying disengagement was in progress. The development had come after weeks of tension, including an incident in which patrolling soldiers from the two sides came to blows on the banks of Pangong Lake, resulting in injuries.

The two armies have since thinned out some forces in a positive signal but soldiers, tanks and other armoured carriers remained heavily deployed in the high-altitude region, an official had said.

India and China fought a brief border war in 1962 and have not been able to settle their border despite two decades of talks. Both claim thousands of kilometres of territory and patrols along the undemarcated Line of Actual Control - the de-facto border - often run into each other, leading to tensions.

Munnar landslide death toll reaches 26; around 40 still missing

Idukki, Aug 8: Nine more bodies have been recovered from the landslide ravaged Pettimudi near Munnar in Idukki on Saturday. With this the death toll in the tragedy reached 26. Around 40 are feared to be still trapped under the debris or washed away.

The rescue operation by NDRF and Fire and Rescue Services that was stopped by Friday evening due to poor light and bad weather resumed by Saturday morning.

Horrifying scene prevailed in the area as relatives of the missing people screamed around in search of their beloved ones. As it is nearly 48 hours since the incident happened, the chances of recovering missing persons alive from the debris is becoming bleak. Three of the bodies recovered on Saturday could not be identified till evening.

Kerala Revenue Minster E Chandrasekharan, who visited the area on Saturday, said that search operation would be carried out until all the missing are recovered.

It was by around 11.30 pm on Thursday that landslide had hit the Nayamakkad estate of Kannan Devan Hills and Plantations. Settlement clusters of plantation workers where 83 persons were staying were reduced to debris as the huge rocks came bulldozing. Five of the residents were reported to be not in the spot while the mishap occured.

Meanwhile, heavy rains led to floods at many parts of the state. Red alert has been issued at Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts for Sunday also. A total of 11,446 persons of 3,530 families were shifted to relief camps across the state, of which major chunk is at Wayanad.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that water level at most dams is increasing swiftly.

11 more test positive for COVID-19 in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 22: Eleven more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Kerala with totalpositive cases in the State touching 437on Wednesday.

Two house surgeonsof the Kozhikode Medical college are among those who have tested positive for the virus.

The two had travelled outside the state,Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters.

Kannur reported seven cases, Kozhikode two, while one case each was reported from the districts of Kottayam and Malappuram.

Only one person tested negative.

The state has 127 active cases and 29,000 people are under observation, including 346 in hospitals.
