Thousands of Christians take to streets to denounce church attack

Tumakuru: Jul 19: Thousands of Christians took to streets in the city to register their protest against the recent attack on Tomlinson church at Siragate, which according to them an attempt to disrupt communal harmony.

The massive rally held from Town Hall Circle to the office of Deputy Commissioner in the city disrupted traffic flow for couple of hours on Monday. The protesters were wearing black badges.

Members of Catholic, Protestant, Baptist and Methodist Christians from Bengaluru, KGF, Chikkaballapur, Gowribidanur and Channapatna took part in the rally.

They later submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner C Anitha. Community leader Samuel Poojary defined the attack as an attack on communal harmony and peace.

“The attack is not just an attack on the church. But it is a conspiracy to disturb communal harmony in the district. Christians have been living in the district for the last 200 years. They have served people at times the region was hit by plague,” he pointed out.

“Police are yet to bring the miscreants to book. “The investigation is being carried out in full swing. We will not set any deadline for the police to arrest the miscreants,” he added.

Religious leaders, during the meeting held in front of the church, called upon the members to maintain peace.

Diocese vice-president Saloman Thomas, treasury Jagadish, secretaries Milton, Vincent, Vinod Kumar, Dr Devaraj Pradeep Kumar of Catholic church, CPM district secretary N K Subramanya and others were present.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: The news and public relations department, the Indian Red Cross Society and the Karnataka State Labour Studies Institute have invited volunteers for the programme to provide real-time information to people to avoid spreading rumours and misinformation about coronavirus.

This is an opportunity to join hands with the Karnataka government and fight coronavirus. These volunteers will be known as the "Corona Warriors", who will be entrusted with the job of monitoring social media sites to check rumours that are being spread across all taluks in the state. They will also take steps to provide proper information.

Applications are already being shared online and registered volunteers will be provided with appropriate training, security kits and identification cards at all district offices of the Department of Information and Public Relations.

At least four volunteers will work in four shifts per day in each taluk of the state. There are about 120 volunteers in Bengaluru city and about 3,000 Corona Warriors are expected to register from across the state. Over 400 volunteers have registered via online application on the first day.

Fifteen people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the state, said Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Friday.

Mangaluru, Apr 22: City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha, on Wednesday, interacted with families of Covid-19 warriors of the Police Department through a special video conference to infuse confidence in them.

He spoke to the family members of the police personnel who, along with ASHA workers, are monitoring the home quarantined people and even assist them in supplying essentials and medicines.

Most of the family member of the police personnel were of North Karnataka origin and the Commissioner asked them to stay safe by staying at home and explained to them the good work done by their family members in the Police Department.
