Thousands witness Koti Chennaya double track Kambala in Moodbidri

Moodbidri, Nov 12: A festive atmosphere prevailed in Moodbidri on Saturday as the town hosted slush-track buffalo race 'kambala' after a gap of over one year.

Koti Chennaya Jodu Kare (double track) 'kambala' began for 24 hours at Kadalakere in Moodbidri at 8.30 a.m. The event was inaugurated by Alangaru temple chief priest Ishwar Bhat. Koti Chenniah Jodukare Kambala Samithi president and MLA Abhayachandra Jain was present.

More than 10,000 people witnessed the bull-racing sport. The organisers served "ganji" (gruel) and chutney to the spectators in the afternoon. The organisers were continuously making an announcement, asking participants to strictly adhere to the rules framed by the government. The entire event was videographed. A total of 137 pairs of buffaloes participated in the event.

It is the first among 19 double tack 'kambalas' scheduled for the 2017-18 race season (November to March) under the auspices of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Jodukare Kambala Committee. The last one will end at Talapady near Mangaluru in March 2018. In addition, at least 150 other ''kambalas'' go on in coastal Karnataka.

The traditional sport of Tulu Nadu could not be conducted last year due to a ban imposed by Karnataka High Court in November 2016 on a public interest litigation petition filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The President promulgated The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Ordinance 2017 in July, 2017, paving the way for conducting ''kambala.'' It is valid till January 20, 2018. But the PETA challenged the ordinance in the Supreme Court which, on November 6, refused to pass an interim stay on the Ordinance. The next hearing is scheduled on November 13.

DKS plans political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring leaders back to Congress

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.

No shortage of essential supplies in Karnataka, says Chief Minister

Bengaluru, Apr 4: The state government have taken all measures to ensure availability of essential supplies including foodgrains, in the state, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa informed here on Saturday.

He was speaking to newsmen, after holding a meeting of the MLAs, MPs and others, where he had briefed over the measures taken by the state government to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

Karnataka Congress constitutes task force to monitor COVID-19 spread

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Friday formed a task force to monitor the spread of COVID-19 disease in the state and provide guidelines and suggestions to contain its proliferation in the state.

In a press release, the KPCC has stated that the 15 member committee will be headed by the senior Congress leader and former Health minister K R Rameshkumar also included two other former health ministers, Shivanand Patil and U T Khader as the members of the committee.
