Three schoolboys drown in slush filled lake

Chikkamagaluru, Oct 9: Three children drowned in a lake after they got stuck in the slush in Kenchinakatte lake, in Bilekal village  on the outskirts of Chikkamagaluru city on Monday evening.

The victims have been identified as Jivith, 14, Murali Karthik, 14, and Chirag 16, all three are residents of the Housing Board Colony in the city.

Jivith and Murali Karthik, were students of class VIII in a city school while Chirag was a class X student of another school.

According to police, on Monday afternoon, all the three took their cycles and rode to Kenchinakatte lake without informing their parents. The lake was filled with slush from the recent flood and landslide.

The incident came to light when the parents alerted Chikkamagaluru city police on Monday evening saying their children are missing. Police alerted their counterparts across the district.

Locals who had seen three kids playing near the lake alerted police of the same. They informed police that the cycles and slippers are lying on the river bank.

Police rushed to the spot and launched a search operation with the help of fire and emergency department personnel. “We found one body on Monday night. Two bodies were retrieved from the lake on Tuesday morning,” said police.

All the three are children of fruit and vegetable sellers. The bodies were handed over to the parents after a postmortem.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: A 56-year-old head constable, who had tested positive for the coronavirus infection a couple of days ago and was undergoing treatment, died on Saturday, police said.

The deceased, attached to the Kalasipalya police station, was being treated at Victoria Hospital here, they said.

This the second death of a policeman in the state due to COVID-19. The first one was an assistant sub-inspector attached to the V V Puram traffic police station.

Officials said the deceased constable was among nine others who had tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, an ASI with the Wilson Garden traffic police station here has also reportedly tested positive. According to sources, the ASI is undergoing treatment at a designated hospital and the station has been sanitised. His contacts are being quarantined.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: The Opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday accused the BJP government, headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, of showing discrimination in distribution of relief material to those affected by the lockdown, clamped to check the spread of Novel Coronavirus, by favouring constituencies represented by the ruling BJP Legislators.

Despite that, the party intends to extend full cooperation to the government during this hour of crisis without indulging in politics, it urged the administration to be “transparent”.

''We have had our (Congress) Task Force meeting today, during which we discussed several matters. There is a lot of difference between the government's talk and its deeds,'' KPCC President D K Shivakumar said.

Madikeri, Mar 29: In an alarming situation in neighbouring Kerala State and instances of inter-state migration of Coronavirus suspects, the authorities on Sunday sealed both Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu borders, prohibiting entry of people from Kerala into Karnataka.

Dakshina Kannada had sealed its borders after repeated instances of people misusing ambulance services to travel to Mangalore. Villagers along with the police hauled mud on to the roads that were used as alternate routes.

The road that connects the two States, which people from east Kasargod used to enter into Karnataka, were closed at Mulleria by dumping mud on the road.
