Udupi, February 20: Three teenage boys, including two brothers, drowned on Monday in Kallakundi river near Kallu Ganapati Temple near Kota in the district, police sources said.
The deceased were identified as Kartik (12), his brother Kaushik (7) and their relative Gautam (11). The two brothers were the children of Thimmappa Poojary, a resident of Achlady, while Gautam was the son of Gopal Poojary.
It is learnt that the tragedy occurred when the children were playing in the water. As it was a holiday to schools, on account of Shivarathri, the boys had been to the river.
The police hinted that the boys could have gone swimming towards whirlpool unsuspectingly fell in it, panicked and drowned. Another boy who was playing with the trio, managed to swim to the safety.
Meanwhile, the jurisdictional Kota police have registered the case as an accidental death and have recorded the statements of the parents of both the deceased as well as of the other boys who were part of the group.
