Tickets only for winnable candidates; Cong’s victory for sure in 2018: KPCC chief

Bengaluru, Oct 29: While the BJP is pulling out all stops to win 150 seats in the upcoming Assembly polls, KPCC chief G Parameshwara has set a modest target for the party, to cross simple majority mark of 113 seats.

Parameshwara completed seven years as KPCC president on Saturday and held an interaction with reporters.

Ruling out the possibility of a coalition government, Dr Parameshwara said the party was confident of crossing the 113 mark.

Sending out a clear message to the kin of several ministers who are ticket aspirants, Parameshwara said candidates will be picked with the sole criterion of winnability.

‘CLP will decide on next CM’

Ruling out any differences about leadership within the party ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls, Parameshwara said the Congress legislature party (CLP) will decide on its next leader as per the party tradition.

“Our first goal is to return to power. All of us will work unitedly and fight the election under collective leadership,” he said.

‘No other short cut’

Refusing to comment on the Chief Minister’s repeated claims that he will be the next CM, he said: “After the CLP selects its leader, the AICC observers and the party high command will take a final decision. There is no other short cut for this.”

Admitting that the Congress leadership has already announced that Mr. Siddaramaiah will lead the party during the elections, he said: “We have all agreed to this decision and are working together towards retaining power once again. Our confidence of coming back to power comes from the programmes that we have given to the people of the State.”

Mangaluru | Miscreants pour kerosene on 200kg beef, thrash driver after waylaying vehicle

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat. They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains. Will you be loyal to your duty and promise. We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku. You should follow the law and treat everyone equally. There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar. The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists. We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.

Udupi: 56-year-old kills self, death note claims he has coronavirus

Udupi, Mar 25: Fearing Corona infection a 56-year-old man has committed suicide over in Udupi.

The deceased has been identified as Gopalkrishna Madivala.

He was a KSRTC bus driver and was currently performing a duty to train new drivers.

He suspected his friend had contracted COVID-19 and as he had a close association with him, he feared he too will be infected and hence hanged himself on a tree.

Although symptoms of Corona infection do not appear to him, he left behind a death note which stated that he resorted to the extreme step over suspicion of having been infected by a corona trait of a friend.

Recently, the first COVID-19 positive case in Udupi where a 34-year-old man has been tested positive.

A press release issued by the District Health and Family Welfare Officer on Wednesday said that the man had come from Dubai to Udupi district on March 18.

Since he showed symptoms of COVID-19, he was admitted to the District Government Hospital on March 23. His throat swab was sent for test and the preliminary report stated that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

'No community spread of COVID-19 in Kerala, but threat persists'

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that there is no community spread or the expected phase three spread of coronavirus in the state so far but the threat continues.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Vijayan said that Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts will be in the red zone with full restrictions.

"All the other ten districts in the State will be in the orange zone. With the detection of new cases today, the status of Kottayam and Idukki districts have been changed from green to orange. The district administration will decide on the hotspot areas to be closed," he said.

He said there would be an increase in the number of random tests in the red zones.

"In an effort to confirm that there is no community spread in the State, random antibody tests would be conducted among health workers, police personnel, home delivery persons, volunteers and migrant labourers," he added.

The Chief Minister said that COVID-19 labs set up at the Pariyaram Government Medical College at Kannur and the Kottayam Medical College have got the approval from the ICMR for coronavirus testing. The lab at Kannur Medical College will start functioning from Friday.

The UV sterilised lab, spread over 2,200 sq ft is equipped with four real-time PCR machines. In the first phase, this lab will be able to do 15 tests per day, which will be gradually increased to conduct 60 tests in the next phase.

"With the opening of these two new labs, tests to detect COVID-19 will be conducted in 14 government labs in Kerala. Apart from this, there are two private labs also in Kerala which are doing these tests. Since the number of coronavirus cases is again increasing in the State, the government has decided to procure ten real-time PCR machines to ramp up testing," he added.
