New Delhi, Oct 4: The Congress on Friday urged people and pluralistic and nationalistic political parties to stand up collectively to fight against, what it called, the growing spectre of authoritarianism under BJP rule.

It claimed this growing authoritarianism in the country will sound the death knell for democracy.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari accused the government of deliberately not taking cognisance of the "deliberate insult" caused to the memory of the father of the nation by promoting the trend in favour of Nathuram Godse on social media on the day the country was celebrating Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.

On October 2, a hashtag #GodseAmarRahe was trending on Twitter.

"We would like to demand that the government needs to enquire into all those people who are responsible for defiling the memory of the father of the nation," Tewari said.

"Who are these people? Who are these forces? Who is behind them who seek to defy and dishonour the memory of the father of the nation by celebrating his assassin. Why has the government not taken suo moto cognisance," he asked.

Alleging that the BJP government has been hyper-active in instructing social media companies to take down posts against their leaders and said it perhaps ranks the first one in the world in doing so.

"It has perhaps deliberately decided to not take cognisance of such a deliberate insult to the memory of the father of the nation," Tewari said.

The Congress leader said a strange spectre of authoritarianism has been let loose across the country ever since the NDA-BJP government came into office for the second time.

The former union minister alleged that eminent intellectuals of this country who write an open letter to the Prime Minister asking for action on mob lynching find themselves to be subjects of an FIR.

"Where is this country headed? People of India need to seriously think, need to seriously apply their minds to what is happening to this country in the past 120 odd days ever since the NDA-BJP government assumed office," he said.

"The portentous signs of growing authoritarianism will spell the death-knell of democracy, if people and all right thinking progressive, pluralistic, nationalistic political parties do not stand up collectively to fight this growing spectre of authoritarianism which seems to have become the new normal in this nation," he alleged.

Tewari said a television producer was suspended merely because he did not show the Prime Minister live and a doctor, who was exonerated by a inquiry committee after spending nine months in jail, now finds himself as a target for another inquiry committee because the objective seems to be very clear that "certain people have to be fixed at all costs".

Lucknow, Jan 6: Undeterred by the large scale protests that claimed as many as 20 lives in the state, Uttar Pradesh government has started the process of implementing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

According to sources in the government, the district magistrates have been directed to identify the migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who have been living in their districts.

Sources said that the state home department has given oral instructions to the district magistrates. ''No written orders have been issued,'' said a senior official here preferring anonymity.

The official said that the district magistrates would be preparing a list containing names of those minorities, who had migrated from these countries following their persecution and had been living without obtaining the citizenship of India.

According to sources, the government expected that the migrants, who could be eligible for the Indian citizenship in accordance with the CAA, could be more in number in the districts, including Rampur, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Lucknow and some others.

''The list will be sent to the union home ministry,'' the official added.

Sources said that the state government will also inform the centre about the ''illegal Muslim migrants'' for their ultimate deportation to their countries of origin.

Different parts of UP had witnessed large scale violence last month during the protests against the CAA. At least 20 people, mostly youngsters, were killed allegedly in police firing and many others were injured. The state government had denied the charge.

Alleged police excesses during and after the protests triggered a nationwide outrage with several rights organisations and activists slamming the BJP government and demanding a high-level probe into the allegations.

Washington, Aug 7: US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) signed executive orders halting all transactions with Chinese applications TikTok and WeChat within 45 days, citing national security concerns, further escalating the tensions between Beijing and Washington.

"WeChat, a messaging, social media, and electronic payment application owned by the Chinese company Tencent Holdings Ltd., reportedly has over one billion users worldwide, including users in the United States. Like TikTok, WeChat automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users.

This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) access to Americans' personal and proprietary information," Trump said in a statement.

Citing reasons for the ban on WeChat, the US President said that the application captures the personal and proprietary information of Chinese nationals visiting the US, thereby providing the CCP a mechanism to keep tabs on the Chinese citizens who may be "enjoying the benefits of a free society for the first time in their lives".

"In March 2019, a researcher reportedly discovered a Chinese database containing billions of WeChat messages sent from users in not only China but also the United States, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia. WeChat, like TikTok, also reportedly censors content that the CCP deems politically sensitive and may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the CCP.

These risks have led other countries, including Australia and India, to begin restricting or banning the use of WeChat. The US must take aggressive action against the owner of WeChat to protect our national security," he added.

Earlier, Trump had issued an order banning TikTok as it "reportedly censors content that the CCP deems politically sensitive, such as content concerning protests in Hong Kong and China's treatment of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities.

TikTok may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the CCP."
US politicians have repeatedly criticised TikTok, owned by Beijing-based startup ByteDance, of being a threat to national security because of its ties to China.

The development comes as China and the US are at loggerheads on a variety of issues including Hong Kong national security law, the South China Sea, the novel coronavirus and trade.

Feb 13: Two Indian crew on board a cruise ship off the Japanese coast have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Indian Embassy in Japan said on Wednesday as authorities confirmed that 174 people have been infected with the deadly disease.

The cruise ship Diamond Princess with 3,711 people on board arrived at the Japanese coast early last week and was quarantined after a passenger who de-boarded last month in Hong Kong was found to be the carrier of the novel virus on the ship.

A total of 138 Indians, including passengers and crew, were on board the ship.

“Due to the suspicion of novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection, the ship has been quarantined by the Japanese authorities till February 19, 2020,” the embassy said in a statement.

“Altogether 174 people have been tested positive for nCoV, including two Indian crew members,” it said.

All the infected people have been taken to hospitals for adequate treatment, including further quarantine, in accordance with the Japanese health protocol, it said.
