Tips to Avoid Wasting Food

We live in a world where a lot of people do not get enough food to eat and so we should make as much of an effort as possible to avoid wasting food. At a very young age, children are taught to feel guilty about wasting food, and for good reason. Globally, the amount of food wasted every year can easily feed almost a billion people. By consciously saving food, we can help ensure that there is enough for everyone, thereby enabling other people to live healthier, happier lives.

Shop smartly

Before you shop for groceries, take a moment to plan out your meals and make your shopping list accordingly. This way you will be able to avoid buying things on impulse and buy things that you actually need instead, making them much less likely to go to waste. Make sure that the perishable items you already have get over before buying new ones.

Store food well

Make sure that you store food well, so that it does not go bad, get insects in it or develop mould or fungus. Keep fruits, vegetables and other perishable items in the fridge, and use airtight containers for food that is being kept outside. Your food cabinet should be cool and dry, since food tends to go bad faster in wet and warm conditions.

Use older items first

FIFO is an organisational method that stands for ‘First In, First Out.’ It makes a lot of sense when it comes to food, because it means that you should first use up the items that you bought earlier and then the ones that you bought later. One way to do this is to move all the older groceries to the front of the fridge or cabinet, so that they are more prominently visible. Otherwise, if they are lurking at the back you might forget about them.

Understand expiry dates

Nowadays, all store-bought items list an expiry date for the product, however these are not necessarily accurate. Manufacturers tend to mention the date till when the product is at its best, however the food does not necessarily go bad by that date. Before throwing something, check if it still looks and smells all right, and if it does, it is probably okay to use.

Use all parts of the food items

When you are cooking, try to use up all the parts of the vegetables that you have. For example, do not peel vegetables like potatoes; just make sure you clean the skin thoroughly. With vegetables that have stems like coriander and broccoli, you can use the stems in your food as well. They do not taste bad and stems and skins have their own nutritional benefits.

Scrape the bowl

When you cook, make sure you use a spatula to scrape the bowl when you transfer food from one vessel to another. This is a handy tip for when you are following a recipe especially, because recipes call for exact proportions. By making sure that you get all of it out, you will ensure that there is no imbalance in the recipe. Otherwise, if you are making a cake for example, and you do not scrape the bowl when you mix the wet ingredients into the dry ones, the wet ingredients will be lesser than the required proportion and the cake will be too dry.

Use up scraps of food

If there are parts of vegetables of meat that you cannot use, you can use them up in other ways. Making broth is one option, whereby you boil the vegetables and/or meat in water with salt and some spices, strain it and use the liquid as a base for soups, sauces and gravies.

Don't throw away imperfect food

Sometimes produce like fruits and vegetables come with bruises and imperfections. Unless the entire thing is rotten, you can cut away the bad parts and use the rest of it rather than throwing it away. If you don’t want to eat the fruit plain you can hide it away in a juice or smoothie, and vegetables get disguised when they are cooked.

Consider alternate recipes

If you have bought ingredients for one recipe and you don’t end up making it, consider alternate options to use up those ingredients. Do a little research online or ask cooking enthusiasts for suggestions. There are plenty of ways to use up ingredients and you will certainly find another recipe that is to your taste.

Serve small portions

When you serve yourself or your family, serve smaller portions rather than larger ones. If you take a large portion you may not be able to finish all of it and so whatever is left will go to waste. Start out with smaller servings instead – you can always take more if you are still hungry.

Share food

If you have made too much food for your household, consider sharing some with your friends or neighbours. This will not only save you from having to eat the same food for multiple meals, it will also earn you some goodwill. Your friends or neighbours may choose to reciprocate and send you dishes of their own, giving you a change from the usual food in your own home.

Use leftovers

Do not throw away food that did not get consumed at meal time. Keep it in the fridge and reuse it at the next meal or take it in a lunchbox with you to work. If you have a lot of leftovers remaining, do not cook food for one meal, eat all the leftovers instead.

Keep an eye on the trash

As strange as this sounds, keep an eye on the garbage that’s being thrown out of your house every day. You will get an idea of what food is being wasted and so you will know which items are not popular with your family and which ones expire before you use them. This way you will know which items not to buy.

Donate food

If you have either cooked food or raw ingredients that nobody in your household is eating, you can donate them to people who might eat it. There are several people who do not get even one square meal a day, and any leftovers that you can give them would be much appreciated.

New Delhi, Jun 6: Actor Ayushmann Khurrana took the internet by storm as he posted a picture of himself in the dark 'Joker' avatar on Saturday.

Artist Swapnil Pawar transformed Khurrana into the 'Joker' through his artwork which the actor posted on his Instagram.

"Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it ... I'm an Agent of Chaos!" Khurrana quoted a famous dialogue from the film 'Joker' in the caption.

The 35-year-old actor, who hasn't played an outright negative role in his career further revealed his fascination for negative characters in the caption.

"Sinister, menacing, evil, cold, conniving yet brilliant, genius - have always thought of playing a negative character like Joker. Thank you @swapnilmpawar for reading my mind and this incredible artwork!" he wrote.

Khurrana believes that though it is good to portray different roles and he would love to play a negative character but the message at the end should be positive.

"I will be happy to play a negative character. I would love to play a morally corrupt person. That will be out of my realm. But the message, at the end of the day, should be positive. I don't want to endorse wrongdoings on screen," he said.

The new look of the 'Article 15' actor won hearts as the post was flooded with scores of comments from his fans.

Mumbai, May 12: Superstar Salman Khan on Tuesday released his latest romantic single "Tere Bina" featuring Jacqueline Fernandez while in quarantine at his Panvel farm house.

The actor, along with close family and friends from the industry, including Iulia Vantur, Waluscha De Sousa, is living in the farm house. This is the second song Salman has released amid the coronavirus pandemic, after "Pyaar Karona."

"About seven weeks ago, when we came to the farm, we didn't know we will be here under a lockdown. So we wanted to do things to keep ourselves busy. That's when we decided to do these songs. We launched 'Pyaar Karona' and now, we are launching 'Tere Bina'," Salman said in a statement.

The song, sung and directed by Salman, is composed by his friend Ajay Bhatia and written by Shab bir Ahmed.

The actor said he had the song "Tere Bina" with him for quite a while but because it wasn't fitting into any of his film, he decided to release it now.

Jacqueline said she didn't think they would be able to shoot the song, which they finished in four days of evening shoots, with such limitations.

"We are used to shooting songs on a large stage with grand production costs. There are costumes, hair, make up. All of a sudden, we find ourselves with a team of three people. For the first time, I was checking lighting and moving props around. It was a great experience and it taught us how to make the most of what we have," she said.

Salman recently sent out food packets and ration from his farm house to those affected by the lockdown.

Mumbai, Jan 26: Filmmakers Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and actor Kangana Ranaut are among the six cinema personalities to be awarded the Padma Shri, officials said on Saturday.

Singers Suresh Wadkar and Adnan Sami as well as veteran TV actor Sarita Joshi have also been conferred with the fourth highest civilian honour of the country.

Karan and Ekta said they were humbled to receive the honour.

"Overwhelmed by so many emotions right now. Humbled, elated and also thankful for the opportunity to live my dream everyday, to create and to entertain. I know my father would be proud and I wish he was here to share this moment with me," he said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Son of veteran Bollywood producer late Yash Johar, Karan Johar started his career as a director in Hindi cinema with the 1998 hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The 47-year-old, who runs Dharma Productions, went on to direct several commercial blockbusters in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student of the Year (2012) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil among others.

Karan has also produced several critically-acclaimed films -- Wake Up Sid, Agneepath, Hasee Toh Phasee, Kapoors & Sons and Raazi.

Ekta, who started her showbiz journey with soap operas, most notably Kyunki Saas Bhi Bahu Thi, is the daughter of veteran actor Jeetendra.

She launched her banner Balaji Telefilms in 1994 and backed many popular TV shows, eventually branching out into movie production.

Ekta, 44, has produced films such as Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, The Dirty Picture, Udta Punjab and Veere Di Wedding.

"My foray into the industry started when I was just 17. I constantly heard I was 'too young', 'too raw' and it was 'too soon' to make things happen. Through the years I've realised it's never 'too soon' to live out your dreams and being 'too young' is probably the best thing," she said.

"Today, as l'm conferred with the 4th highest civilian honour- Padma Shri', I'm humbled. I hope to continue breaking boundaries, to continue giving young talent a chance and to strive to give back to the country for all the love that's come my way.

The timing couldn't have been more perfect, as this news arrives 2 days before my son's first birthday. Grateful & Thankful!" she added.

Kangana, a three-time National Award Winner, is the only Bollywood actor to receive the Padma Shri this year.

The 32-year-old, who made her debut in movies in 2006 with Gangster, is regarded as one of the most successful female artistes of this generation.

After a series of films with Mahesh Bhatt's banner, she found success with Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, for which she won her first National Film Award in 2009.

She went on to win two back-to-back National Film Awards for her performances in Queen (2014) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015). Kangana's latest release is Panga.

Wadkar, 64, a veteran in the music industry, started his career as a playback singer in 1978 with song Seene mein jalan for Gaman. He has lent his voice to memorable tracks like Aye zindagi gale lagaa le, Aur is dil mein, Pardesi pardesi, Sapne mein, Raat ke dhai baje and Jag Ja.

In his over four-decade-long career, Wadkar has collaborated with celebrated composers RD Burman, Shiv-Hari, Ilayaraja, Khayyam, AR Rahman, Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Bhardwaj and Hridayanath Mangeshkar.

Sami, 48, now an Indian-citizen, made a mark for himself in country's indie-pop scene with single Kabhi toh nazar milao, for which he collaborated with veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle.

"The greatest moment for any Artiste is to be appreciated & recognised by his/her government. I am overwhelmed with infinite gratitude for being honoured with the 'Padma Shri' by the Government of India. It has been a 34 years musical journey.. 'Bohot Shukriya'!!" Sami tweeted.

He released various albums in the early 2000s and also served as music composer for films Lucky: No Time for Love (2005), Dhamaal (2007) and Shaurya (2008).

Sami, born in London to a Pakistani Air force veteran, applied for Indian citizenship in 2015 and became a citizen of the country in January 2016.

Joshi, a household name and a popular theatre personality, started her acting career as a child artiste and made her TV debut in 1980s with Titliyan.

Some of her most iconic shows are Hasratein , Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka , Baa Bahoo Aur Baby and Bh Se Bhade.

Joshi, 78, has also featured in movies such as Nazar , Darna Zaroori Hai , Dasvidaniya , Singham Returns and Simmba.

She was bestowed with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for acting in Gujarati in 1988.

"I am very happy and humbled with this honour. I am working from an early age, I have never worked for awards, for me work is worship. I have always worked from heart and given my best in whatever I have done. I will be known as Padma Shri Sarita Joshi, this is such a big honour. I am happy as my children are happy," Joshi told PTI.

The Padma Shri for this year has been awarded to a total of 118 eminent personalities across fields of art, literature and education, medicine, trade and industry, sports, public affairs, social work and science and engineering.
