Newsroom, Jul 8: The final ‘training camp’ for the terrorists who assassinated rationalist thinker Prof M M Kalburgi around four years ago was organised in Dakshina Kannada district, according to the Special Investigation Team of the Karnataka police.

According to SIT sources, key suspect Praveen Prakash Chatur, who was arrested on May 31, took the police to a rubber plantation at Dharamsthala in the coastal district, last month and said that is where he was trained for the murder.

Chatur drove the motorcycle that took the shooter, Ganesh Miskin, to Kalburgi’s home on August 30, 2015.

The owner of the rubber plantation – businessman K. Ananth Kamath – is a known associate of the extremist Hindu group Sanatan Sanstha and its affiliate Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS). He is even mentioned on the HJS website, as a “devout Hindu”.

When contacted Kamath, he said he had “no idea” about his estate being used for such training. “If I knew I would not allow it,” he said.

Kamath’s name has also come up in the investigation into the killing of Bangalore-based journalist Gauri Lankesh. Amit Degwekar, a Sanstha member arrested in the case, mention Kamath as being involved in the planning activities.

In the Lankesh case as well, several suspects have talked about attending a training camp at a rubber plantation in the Dharamsthala region. Chatur was reportedly taken the the plantation as the police hoped to find bullets or cartridges there, but failed to do so.

The Sanatan Sanstha and HJS have been linked to the murders of Kalburgi, Lankesh, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. The chargesheet in the Lankesh assassination refers to the killing as an “organised crime” by the Sanatan Sanstha. In his confession, Dabholkar’s shooter said a right-wing group had trained him in shooting, bomb-making and ideology in the days before the assassination.

New Delhi, Jun 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, on a plea challenging his election in 2019 from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as a joint candidate of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishiksh Roy issued notice to the returned candidate from the high-profile constituency on an appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court's order by which an election petition against his win was dismissed.

In the proceedings held through video-conferencing, the top court issued notice and tagged the appeal filed by G Devarajegowda for hearing with other similar pending plea filed by the BJP candidate on the issue.

Mr Devarajegowda in the plea said that his election petition was dismissed by the High Court on "procedural irregularities". The plea said that Mr Prajwal had resorted to unfair and corrupt practices and his election should be set aside.

It said the High Court did not consider the fact that by dismissing the election petition, it was running a risk of having a representative in parliament who has not got the maximum number of valid votes.

The petitioner, an advocate by profession, sought a declaration of rival BJP candidate, A Manju, as the winner for having secured the maximum number of valid votes.

A separate appeal was earlier filed by Mr Manju against the High Court order and the top court had already issued notice to the retuned candidate on that.

Mr Manju had challenged the 2019 election of Mr Prajwal on the ground that there was allegedly non-disclosure of assets held by him in his election affidavit.

Mr Prajwal was declared winner with 6,76,606 votes. Mr Manju came first runner-up with 5,35,282 votes.

Udupi, Apr 24: While several state governments and NGOs are actively working to provide essentials to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown, a fisherwoman in Karnataka's Udupi has proved that even a small gesture of help for others can make a huge difference in the society.
A fisherwoman, Sharadakka, distributed rice to 140 needy families in her neighbourhood during the ongoing lockdown. The contribution was made by spending all her life savings amounting to Rs 30,000. The amount was saved by her over a period of time in an effort to build a house for herself.
On Thursday Udupi Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesh visited her and ensured help to build her house.
"Spending her meagre earnings, Sharadakka generously filled many empty stomachs amid the nation-wide lockdown, which is a matter of pride," said the Deputy Commissioner.
