Mangaluru, Jan 25: Minister for Textiles, Ports and Inland Transport Baburao Chinchanasur said that all the tranches of ADB-funded project to prevent sea erosion would be completed in Ullal region of Dakshina Kannada by June 2016.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the first tranche of the project that includes construction of four inshore berms and two offshore reefs along with breakwaters, out of which the construction of the first inshore berm and breakwater was already underway. Two inshore berms, one offshore reef and breakwater are expected to be completed before the onset of monsoons this year, he assured.

According to the information provided by the minister, the construction work of four inshore berms at an estimated cost of Rs 25.21 crore had been handed over to RDS Projects Limited, Cochin and an expenditure of Rs 16.12 had been incurred so far. The construction work of two offshore reefs at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore had been handed to Dharthi Dredging and Infrastructure Limited, Hyderbad and the cost incurred so far was Rs 28.52 crore. The reconstruction of breakwaters had been handed over to R B Chavan- Arjun Earth Movers, Mumbai through the tender process at an estimated cost of Rs 40.91 crore.

He said that the loan negotiations with ADB for the second tranche of the project would be done in October 2015.

In the second tranche, a total of 11 places had been identified along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts with the purpose of implementing a stable shore and preserving it, including Someshwara, Yermal Thenka, Udyavara, Kodi Bengre, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Maruvanthe, Madikal, Shiroor, Murudeshwar and Pavinakurve, he said.

Mr Chinchansoor said that the state government intended to develop and modernise 12 minor ports along the coastline by offering the land to private companies on a lease basis under the Karnataka State Port Development Policy (KSPD) 2014, which would be a profitable venture for the state government.

On setting up of a Maritime Board for Mangaluru, he said that the proposal was still pending for approval before the President.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Karnataka Chief Minister's political adviser MP Renukacharya has courted controversy yet again with his remarks targeting the Muslim community at a pro-CAA rally in Karnataka on Monday.

Addressing a rally in support of the new citizenship law, the BJP lawmaker accused Muslims of collecting weapons in mosques instead of praying. "There are few traitors who sit in a masjid and write fatwas. They collect weapons inside the mosque instead of praying. Is this why you want a Masjid," Renukacharya said on Monday.

Renukacharya said he won't hesitate to use the money allotted to Muslims for Hindus. "I will resort to such politics in my taluk where the money allotted for Muslims can be used for Hindus. I will put you [Muslims] in your place and show what politics is," said Renukacharya, who is a close aide of CM BS Yediyurappa.

This is not the first time a Karnataka BJP leader has made communal remarks targeting the minority community. Earlier, BJP MLA Somashekar Reddy had made controversial remarks at a pro-citizenship law protest in Ballari when he asked those opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act to think of the "consequences" if the majority community members hit the streets against them.

The MLA had said, "If you do any drama, then if 100 per cent people come, understand what will be your situation. Congress people are lying to you, believing them you are coming on streets. We are 80 per cent, you are 17 per cent, if we react, what will be your situation? Be careful," Reddy had said.

Following outrage, a case was filed against Somashekar Reddy for alleged provocative speech targeting those protesting against the amended citizenship law.

Bengaluru, Aug 5: Touted as a first of its kind in the nation, a mobile Covid-19 lab was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar.

The lab, approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) can do 9,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) tests per month, an official press release said here. "This is a unique lab having all safety features and capable of producing 100% accurate results within four hours," Dr Sudhakar was quoted as saying in the press release.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISC) had developed the lab and handed it over to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

The mobile lab can also be used for molecular diagnostic-testing and can be deployed in coronavirus hot spots quickly, the release said adding, apart from Covid-19, the lab can be utilised for testing H1N1, HCV, TB, HPV and HIV among others.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Members and activists of social organisation Rakshana Vedike on Thursday staged a protest and demanded the arrest of BJP MLA Somashekhara Reddy, for his 'provocative' remarks and statements.

The protesters gathered near Gandhi’s statue near Maurya circle in the city and demanded that the BJP MLA should be arrested immediately.

The protesters alleged that Reddy’s remark were aimed at inciting communal hatred and that his remarks do not do justice to his being an elected representative of the people in the state assembly.
