Mangaluru, Jan 25: Minister for Textiles, Ports and Inland Transport Baburao Chinchanasur said that all the tranches of ADB-funded project to prevent sea erosion would be completed in Ullal region of Dakshina Kannada by June 2016.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the first tranche of the project that includes construction of four inshore berms and two offshore reefs along with breakwaters, out of which the construction of the first inshore berm and breakwater was already underway. Two inshore berms, one offshore reef and breakwater are expected to be completed before the onset of monsoons this year, he assured.

According to the information provided by the minister, the construction work of four inshore berms at an estimated cost of Rs 25.21 crore had been handed over to RDS Projects Limited, Cochin and an expenditure of Rs 16.12 had been incurred so far. The construction work of two offshore reefs at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore had been handed to Dharthi Dredging and Infrastructure Limited, Hyderbad and the cost incurred so far was Rs 28.52 crore. The reconstruction of breakwaters had been handed over to R B Chavan- Arjun Earth Movers, Mumbai through the tender process at an estimated cost of Rs 40.91 crore.

He said that the loan negotiations with ADB for the second tranche of the project would be done in October 2015.

In the second tranche, a total of 11 places had been identified along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts with the purpose of implementing a stable shore and preserving it, including Someshwara, Yermal Thenka, Udyavara, Kodi Bengre, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Maruvanthe, Madikal, Shiroor, Murudeshwar and Pavinakurve, he said.

Mr Chinchansoor said that the state government intended to develop and modernise 12 minor ports along the coastline by offering the land to private companies on a lease basis under the Karnataka State Port Development Policy (KSPD) 2014, which would be a profitable venture for the state government.

On setting up of a Maritime Board for Mangaluru, he said that the proposal was still pending for approval before the President.

Mangaluru/Udupi, May 20: Islamic scholars belonging to different schools of thoughts including two prominent Qadis have issued special guidelines asking all Muslims in the region to offer prayers and celebrate Eid al-Fitr at home this year in keeping with the extended covid-19 lockdown.

Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan is rather a ‘humanitarian event’ than a fiesta. This year Eid is likely to be observed in coastal Karnataka on May 23 or May 24 depending on sighting of the new moon.  

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Muslims are preparing for — and reconciling itself to — a most unusual Eid bereft of all the usual trappings like huge prayer congregations, ceaseless shopping, social visits and the inviting warmth of an Eid Mubarak embrace.

In their separate messages, Udupi Qadi Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar and Mangaluru Qadi Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar have urged Muslims to refrain from all kinds of public gatherings during Eid. Noting that Muslims in the region have followed all the advisories in issued by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus in the blessed month of Ramadan, they have urged them to follow the guidelines during Eid too.

On social media groups, messages like “no new clothes, just wear your best clothes” are being circulated among family and friends, urging people to fill the festive void with the spirit of giving. The suggestions range from paying a needy child’s school fee or someone’s rent to helping a lockdown-hit trader revive his business.

Following guidelines are issued by the top clerics ahead Eid

1) There will be no Eid prayer in mosques or Eid-gahs. Hence, Muslims should offer Eid al-Fitr prayer in their homes with family members.

2) Distributing Zakat al-Fitr among needy is mandatory. However necessary safety measures should be taken while going out such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distance. As there is lockdown from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day, Zakat al-Fitr can be distributed a day before Eid or on the day of Eid before evening. 

3) Women, children and elderly people should not step out of the houses.

4) Avoid visiting graveyards or other places.

5) All mosques are closed due to lockdown. Hence, observe Eid in a simple way and set an example for the society. 

6) Strictly follow all the guidelines issued by the state and central governments

Mangalore, Feb 4: Following the directions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to use khadi for convocations and other events in universities and colleges, Mangalore University has decided to use khadi-silk for ceremonial robes.

The amendments to the statute governing convocations for conferring degrees were approved in the Academic Council meeting.

Mangalore University Registrar Prof A M Khan said on Tuesday that the colour of the gown of the chancellor will be rich dark red or vermilion and the ‘angavasthram’ will be of gold with blue border.

Bengaluru, Apr 5: Opening of Karnataka's borders to Kerala at this point in time will be like "embracing death," chief minister B S Yediyurappa said on Saturday making clear his government's stand not opening the state border.

The chief minister repeatedly said that for his government interest of the people of the state was supreme.

Yediyurappa made his stand clear in a letter to former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda.

Gowda had recently written to the chief minister on March 31 seeking relaxation of the border restrictions on "humanitarian" grounds.

He had also written to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing his anguish against Karnataka authorities for imposing restriction and promising to raise the matter with prime minister Narendra Modi.

Stating the decision to close the border was not sudden, Yediyurappa said, it was a conscious decision after analysing the health situation in the area following the spread of COVID-19.

The chief minister cited the Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru branch data regarding the spread of Covid-19 in Kasargod of Kerala and surrounding areas which was alarming.

Noting that the region has nearly 106 positive coronaviruscases, he said, "this is the region with most number of infections in the country."

If this restriction is removed, it puts the health of the people of Karnataka in to risk and create a situation of "embracing death", so we will not be able to open the border, Yediyurappa said.

He also clarified that there was no prejudice behind his government's decision, and the interest of the people of the state was of utmost importance.

"...There is also no political maliciousness. We want to have good and brotherly relationship with neighbouring states," he said, adding that opening the border will open a pandora's box that will be disastrous for the state.

Yediyurappa also thanked opposition parties for their support to his government in its fight against COVID-19.
