Mangaluru, Jan 25: Minister for Textiles, Ports and Inland Transport Baburao Chinchanasur said that all the tranches of ADB-funded project to prevent sea erosion would be completed in Ullal region of Dakshina Kannada by June 2016.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the first tranche of the project that includes construction of four inshore berms and two offshore reefs along with breakwaters, out of which the construction of the first inshore berm and breakwater was already underway. Two inshore berms, one offshore reef and breakwater are expected to be completed before the onset of monsoons this year, he assured.

According to the information provided by the minister, the construction work of four inshore berms at an estimated cost of Rs 25.21 crore had been handed over to RDS Projects Limited, Cochin and an expenditure of Rs 16.12 had been incurred so far. The construction work of two offshore reefs at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore had been handed to Dharthi Dredging and Infrastructure Limited, Hyderbad and the cost incurred so far was Rs 28.52 crore. The reconstruction of breakwaters had been handed over to R B Chavan- Arjun Earth Movers, Mumbai through the tender process at an estimated cost of Rs 40.91 crore.

He said that the loan negotiations with ADB for the second tranche of the project would be done in October 2015.

In the second tranche, a total of 11 places had been identified along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts with the purpose of implementing a stable shore and preserving it, including Someshwara, Yermal Thenka, Udyavara, Kodi Bengre, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Maruvanthe, Madikal, Shiroor, Murudeshwar and Pavinakurve, he said.

Mr Chinchansoor said that the state government intended to develop and modernise 12 minor ports along the coastline by offering the land to private companies on a lease basis under the Karnataka State Port Development Policy (KSPD) 2014, which would be a profitable venture for the state government.

On setting up of a Maritime Board for Mangaluru, he said that the proposal was still pending for approval before the President.

Udupi, Jan 8: Senior journalist Raviraj Valalambe passed away due to suspected cardiac arrest on Tuesday night at his residence in Kinnimulki, here. He was 50.

Raviraj was rushed to a hospital after he complained of chest pain. He breathed his last on way to medical facility.

He was the director of Prime TV, a local Kannada news channel.

He had worked as a reporter for ETV and Suvarna News channel earlier.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.

Even as the Muslims of undivided Dakshina Kannada district broke out of the “spiral of silence” and made history by leading an unprecedented protest against CAA, NPR and NRC as well as the categorial mistreatment of non-saffronites at the hands of the police across the country, mainstream media turned a blind eye to the spectacle at the Shah Garden Maidan in Mangaluru’s Adyar where about two lakh patriots with tricolor in their hands converged to assert themselves on January 15th, 2020, a date which will be remembered by the people of coastal Karnataka forever.

The largest gathering in the history of Mangaluru was absolutely peaceful, law-abiding and respectful. While the slogans of ‘Azaadi’ were reverberating in the atmosphere, the protesters were seen making way for vehicles and passersby, taking care of women and helping elderly citizens on the highway adjacent to the ground. Though the organisers and most of the participants were Muslims, they collectively identified themselves as “We, the people of India”.

The district administration and the police department hadn’t imagined or even dreamt of such a mammoth gathering after blocking the highway and banning public transport from 9 am to 9 pm. Many opine that this action was taken only to discourage the concerned from participating in the protest and to create fear in the hearts of the people who are yet to process the unjustifiable deaths of two innocent citizens in an unwarranted police firing a few weeks ago.

What has since surprised the protesters most is the mainstream media’s blatant attempt to downplay the significance of this largest ever gathering. Shockingly, it could not make it to the front pages of any of the state-level Kannada daily newspapers except city-based Vaartha Bharathi. In the absence of The Hindu, which had announced a holiday on account of Makar Sankranti, most of the English newspapers too pitilessly buried the historic event in their inner pagers. National TV channels too were evidently reluctant to cover the event until NDTV started telecasting the news of the protest.

This uneasy relationship between the media and minorities in coastal Karnataka has long existed, but the non-coverage of the huge protest of Jan 15 marks a quantum leap beyond the media’s traditional pro-Sangh Parivar stance and biases –– which in the past had often demonised non-saffronites –– to now completely ignore and suppress the people’s voice. This media bias has naturally evoked a sharp response from netizens, who took to social media to issue clarion calls to boycott the mainstream media forever.

Cleanliness Drive

Most major protest meets and rallies –– both religious and political –– leave behind tonnes of garbage, especially water bottles, placards and buntings. However, the organisers of the Jan 15 protest meet led by example by launching a cleanliness drive in the area soon after the protesters left the venue peacefully. The drive continued on Jan 16 too. (Ironically, amidst this ongoing cleanliness drive, a local news portal captured photos of a few plastic bottles scattered along the road at Adyar and published a report accusing the event organisers and participants of polluting the area!)

Bengaluru, Feb 7: Karnataka's Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services on Thursday issued guidelines for testing, isolation, hospital admission and discharge in view of the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) in Wuhan city of China, a virus that has infected nearly 20,000 globally and has killed more than 500 in China.

According to the guidelines, the sample of any passenger, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, with a history of travel to or residence in Wuhan city of China in the last 14 days, has to be collected and tested.

And the sample of any health personnel, who develops symptoms of the virus after being associated with the infected persons, has to be collected.

The circular further says that the clinical sample of any suspect/probable case of nCoV will be sent to the laboratory confirmation and the case will be kept in isolation. If tested positive, the treatment has to be provided as per the existing guidelines.

The virus originated from Wuhan, a Chinese city, in December and has since then spread to various parts around the world.

China has imposed quarantine and travel restrictions, affecting the movement of 56 million people in more than a dozen cities, amid fears that the transmission rate will accelerate.
