Trouble brews for CBI director over meeting 2G accused

September 4, 2014

Ranjit SinhaNew Delhi, Sep 4: CBI Director Ranjit Sinha appears to be in trouble as he may have a tough time in the Supreme Court on Thursday while explaining the “frequent visits to his residence” by top corporate honchos and businessmen accused in 2G and coal scam cases.

Sinha flatly denied any wrongdoing and termed fake the visitors’ register submitted in the Supreme Court by lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who approached the apex court seeking removal of Sinha from monitoring the 2G case. The veracity of the visitors’ diary could not be independently verified.

The diary purportedly contains the names of Anil Ambani’s aides Tony Jesudasan and A N Sethuraman, and meat exporter Moin Qureshi. Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) is an accused in the 2G scam case, while Qureshi is under the scanner of the Income Tax Department.

“The register (submitted by Bhushan) is fake, I have two registers that are maintained by the police,” Sinha was quoted as saying by a TV channel. Sinha also said he had met Reliance officials. “But have I shown favour to anyone?” he asked.

The CBI had, on Tuesday, issued a statement denying any illegal conduct by its director. The Supreme Court will examine the “diary” and its contents on Thursday.

The Aam Aadmi Party, in which Bhushan is a senior functionary, demanded the immediate suspension of Sinha for compromising the agency’s impartiality through his unbecoming behaviour of “holding secret meetings”.

“The diary contains several hundred pages in which there are several thousands of hand written entries. Now, for the director to deny the existence of such a diary shows (his) desperation to try and get time. This can be authenticated through a probe. It will not take more than five minutes. Just ask the guards who made the entries,” Bhushan said.

The issue snowballed into a controversy with a report on a newspaper’s website and Bhushan informing the Supreme Court that he has come across “disturbing and explosive” materials relating to Sinha’s frequent meetings with RADAG officials and other accused at his residence.

Sinha purportedly met two officials of RADAG 50 times in 15 months (between May 2013 and August 2014) at his official residence 2, Janpath, here. Sinha is already under fire from the Supreme Court in connection with the ongoing trial in the 2G scam case.

Two names are mentioned incompletely in the diary like Tony, Toni, Toni+Sir, Raman, Setu, Setu Raman and Toni+Setu. The registration numbers of the cars in which they arrived were also recorded.

Qureshi also visited Sinha on several occasions along with former director of CBI, A P Singh, now a member of the Union Public Service Commission. He visited Sinha at least 90 times in 15 months, the report claimed, adding that he seems to have been Sinha’s family friend.

Qureshi and wife were mentioned as Kureshi, Muin Kureshi, Kureshiji, Kureshi1, Kureshiwife, Kureshi (madam), written both in English and Hindi in the register.

Qureshi even sent his tailor and car to Sinha’s residence at times, the report claimed.

Mumbai, Jan 29: Unfazed by his suspension from flying on Tuesday, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday claimed that he once again approached television journalist Arnab Goswami, who he said was his co-passenger on a flight from Lucknow, for an "honest discussion" but was turned away.

Kamra tweeted in the morning that "Arnab Goswami was again travelling in his flight while returning from Lucknow". "I again asked him politely if he wants to have a honest discussion he with his verbal arrogant hand jester he asked me to move away & I did that (sic)," he tweeted.

The comedian was suspended from flying by IndiGo and Air India on Tuesday after he allegedly heckled Goswami aboard a Mumbai-Lucknow plane and posted a video clip on his Twitter handle.

While IndiGo suspended Kamra from flying with it for a period of six months, Air India banned him until further notice.

In a statement released on Twitter after he posted the video, Kamra said he did "exactly what Republic TV journalists do to people in their private/public spaces". Kamra stated he had not done anything criminal by allegedly heckling Goswami.

New Delhi, Feb 24: India and the US are committed to defend their people from radical islamic terrorism, resolved to significantly expand defence ties and are working on a "fantastic" trade deal, said US President Donald Trump on Monday while asserting that his country "loves" and is "loyal" to India.

Addressing a huge crowd at 'Namaste Trump' event at the Motera stadium here, the US president, accompanied by his wife Melania and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, talked about India's great tradition of embracing individual freedom, rule of law, dignity of every human being and where people worship side-by-side in harmony.

On his maiden visit, Trump, who was welcomed by Modi on his arrival here, said his country will remain a "loyal" friend of India and called the Prime Minister an "exceptional leader" who works day and night for the country.

"India and the US are committed to fight terrorists and their ideology; that is why my government is working with Pakistan to crack down on terror groups," Trump said in the presence of his family -- daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner-- and top brass of his administration.

"The US will always be faithful and loyal friend of India. Thank you for the spectacular welcome," he added.

He also announced that the two countries will firm up defence deals worth USD 3 billion on Tuesday and that the US will become India's premier defence partner.

"India and US have natural and enduring friendship," Trump said to a cheering crowd.

"We are quickly revitalising our alliances all around world," he said.

Trump said both countries are working on a "fantastic trade" deal, and observed that Modi is a "tough negotiator".

The US president also heaped praises on Modi, saying the Prime Minister is a "living proof" of what an Indian can achieve with hard work as Trump referred to his humble background as a tea-seller, who had a landslide win in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

On his part, Modi welcomed Trump to "world's largest democracy" and said a "new history" was being created.

Modi also praised Trump's leadership in containing terrorism.

Trump said as the world's largest economy, India gives hope to all humanity and has become an economic giant.

"There is a difference between a nation that rises by coercion and one that rises by setting its people free -- that is India. India and the US have natural and enduring friendship," he said.

He also touched on India's cultural diversity and riches as he highlighted the success of its blockbuster movies like DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) and Sholay, and its sporting icons like Sachin Tedulkar and Virat Kohli.

He highlighted the boom in the US economy under his presidency and added that India will soon be home to the biggest middle class as it will eliminate extreme poverty in in next 10 years.

On his part, Modi said ties between India and the US are no longer just another partnership but have touched far greater heights.

Welcoming Trump, he said a "new history" is being created.

Visit of President Trump to India with his family shows strong ties between India and the US, said Modi.
