Bengaluru, Nov 25: Members of Anjuman-e-Imamia, a Shia Muslim group, along with likeminded people including a few Christians, staged a protest in front of the office of national television channel India Today/Aajtak on Richmond road on Friday.

The protestors shouted slogans against a journalist, who allegedly insulted the female religious figures of Islam and Christianity. They also demanded the closure of the TV channel for broadcasting 'blasphemous' tweets on social media.

The group was outraged by Aaj Tak TV journalist Rohit Sardana’s tweet against Bibi Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad; Ayisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad; and Immaculate Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

Sardana had posted the offensive tweet on Nov 16 in the context of the film Sexy Durga. Sardana referred to women in Islam and Christianity, including Prophet Muhammad's wife Ayesha, daughter Fatima and Mary, the mother of Jesus. He asked why the title of 'Sexy' was only put after a Hindu goddess and asked if the same could be done for the other names as well.

The protests took a violent turn when a few of the agitators allegedly vandalized the office. They smashed the glass doors of the office.

Traffic movement on busy Richmond Road was disrupted for a while. The police, however, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Ashok Nagar police have deployed additional police personnel to maintain law and order.

Earlier the protestors had silently marched from Masjid-e-Askari to the TV office shouting slogans.
