Twinkle Khanna: Yogi Adityanath should do 'gas-releasing' asana

March 27, 2017

Mumbai, Mar 27: Taking a dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for his rather off-the-cuff remarks on "women's protection", author-columnist Twinkle Khanna on Friday suggested that he needed to do a yoga 'asana' which eases "releasing gas".

At the India Today Woman Summit and Awards here, Twinkle -- popular in the social media world as Mrs Funnybones -- was at her wittiest best while fielding questions on her life as a writer, mother, wife and her views on feminism, politicians and motherhood.

twinkleAsked what she would have to say to Adityanath, who according to session hostess Koel Purie "doesn't have an amazing track record for his statements on women", Twinkle quipped: "He needs to do an asana..., which helps release gas.

"But I think he's also changing fashion. In fact, I had tweeted as well that Asian Paints must announce the new colour of the season -- 'Beguiling Saffron' with a tagline: Orange is the new brown."

Women empowerment and feminism is a subject close to the heart of the actress-turned-writer, whose latest column explored sexual harassment at work.

Of late, Bollywood's leading ladies like Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone, have been flaunting T-shirts with feminist slogans. But there's a need to go beyond that, says Twinkle, who believes in the event presenter Vivel's "Ab Samjhauta Nahin" tagline.

"As long as you believe in equality, you're a feminist. Having said that, these days I see a lot of proverbial T-shirt wearing feminists, and that's fantastic.

"There's one (T-shirt) by Dior that I really want... But with me, I feel like I need to go a bit beyond that."

What is she doing on that front?

"I think for me, my version of feminism is based on me pushing the envelope by picking stories I tell and projects I plan. So I am making a movie called 'Pad Man'. It revolves around menstruation and sanitary pads.

"I've put my money, my clout, my goodwill and determination behind a project which I believe will alleviate the burden from a lot of women, and will take a part of our biology that is right now wrapped in newspaper and shoved down black plastic bags and bring it out for open discussion.

"That's my version of feminist."

"Pad Man" is Twinkle's debut film production and it features Akshay. It is based on a real life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who devised a cheaper way to make sanitary pads for women in his village and also sells the machine which makes low-cost pads to NGOs to work towards women's hygiene.

Twinkle says she chased Muruganantham for eight months, and when they spoke, she found an instant connect with his one-liners and how he doesn't take himself very seriously. He once told her: "You look like the actress...Raveena Tandon."

"I was about to drop his story," Twinkle quipped, adding another joke when she narrated how she was recently handed over a bag at home, and told that it had her "Pampers".

Kolhapur, Feb 21: Voicing against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), renowned lyrics and thinker Javed Akhtar has said that the act was an assault to secularism and integrity of India and with the ongoing protests, the nation had reached a threshold for an another struggle.

Speaking here on Thursday night at an event organised on the 5th death anniversary of CPI senior leader and progressive leader Com Govind Pansare, Mr Akhtar said the newly amended citizenship act was a plot to split the country.

Mr Javed said that communalism has a deep root in India and it spread after the formation of Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League in British India. "Muslim league got Pakistan but Hindu Mahasabha is still unsatisfied," he alleged and added that BJP was now 'working as a branch of RSS' and trying to 'split the country' through NRC.

Mumbai, Jan 9: Actor Juhi Chawla on Wednesday said instead of constantly criticising the government, one should reflect on own conduct and talk about uniting rather than dividing.

The actor attended an event which aimed to counter "Free Kashmir (narrative), anti-India slogans, false propaganda and clear the misconception."

Juhi said as artistes, it's unfair to be questioned about incidents "just for a reaction" when they should be given time to truly understand the situation.

"We are going to work, thinking how to execute our task, then some incident happens somewhere and suddenly the media asks, 'what do you think about this?' We haven't understood the matter, people haven't understood the matter but you need a reaction.

"Let people understand, whether it's NRC or CAA, and what's is it about, why is this being talked about," Juhi told reporters.

The actor said it is sad that people talk about division more than unity.

"Everyone is quick to talk about dividing. Why don't we talk about uniting? Why does everyone say 'what is the government doing, why is it doing this?' but I say if you point one finger there then three fingers are at you.

New Delhi, Jan 9: A Delhi court Thursday directed the makers of the Deepika Padukone starer feature film 'Chhapaak' to give credit to acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal’s lawyer in the movie.

Additional Civil Judge Pankaj Sharma said it was necessary that advocate Aparna Bhat's contribution is acknowledged.

"This Court is of the considered view that facts are indicative that the plea of the plaintiff for interim injunction is well-founded and it is necessary that her contribution be acknowledged by providing on the slide on the actual footage and the images, the line 'Aparna Bhat continues to fight the cases of sexual and physical violence against women' during the screening of the film.

"The said line on screen maybe with a rider that the same is with the court order," the judge said.

Advocate Bhat filed the application saying that despite representing Agarwal in courts for several years and helping in the movie-making, she was not given credit in the movie.

She said the filmmakers took her help in the entire process of writing and shooting the movie, but did not give the credit.
