Bengaluru, Jul 9: Days after 13 Congress-JD(S) MLAs submitted their resignation from the Assembly pushing the Karnataka coalition on the brink of collapse, Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar today rejected letters of eight such legislators for not being in order and asked them to send letters as per the correct format.

The Speaker, on Tuesday, went through the resignation letters of all the 13 MLAs and found that only five were in order - Anand Singh, Narayana Gowda, Pratapgouda Patil, K Gopalaiah and Ramalinga Reddy. “We have informed the others that their resignation letters aren’t in order, and that they should submit them against in the proper format,” Kumar said.

The resignation letters of eight MLAs are not in compliance with Rule 202 of the Procedure and Conduct of Business in Karnataka Legislative Assembly, he said.

Accordingly, legislators ST Somashekhar, H Vishwanath, Muniratna, BA Basavaraj, BC Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Shivaram Hebbar and Mahesh Kumathalli will have to tender their resignation again.

“I have called Anand Singh, Pratapgouda Patil and Narayana Gowda for a hearing on July 12. On July 15, I have called Gopalaiah and Ramalinga Reddy,” Kumar said.

The Speaker pointed out that he had scheduled these personal hearings even when the legislature will be in session. The monsoon session starts July 12. “I am not losing any time. I want to do this transparently,” he said.

On July 11, a day before the legislature session starts, the Speaker has asked the Congress party to come for a hearing to put forth their argument over a petition it has moved seeking the disqualification of the rebel legislators.

Kumar also said his office had received representations from roadside traders, labourers, farmers and others urging him not to accept the resignations. “They have argued that their tax money will be used to conduct elections. I will give them a hearing as well,” the Speaker said.

The Speaker also revealed that he had received letters from Governor Vajubhai R Vala.

“The Governor wrote to me stating that the MLAs had met him and that they had resigned voluntarily. I wrote back expressing surprise that they met him and not me. Out of respect he has for me, the Governor has expressed faith that I will uphold Constitutional provisions. I wrote back that besides upholding the Constitution, I was simultaneously obliged to the people of Karnataka who are going through a sense of trauma due to the instability of the government,” Kumar said.

The Governor also wrote to Kumar about the resignation of Independent legislator H Nagesh from the Cabinet. “To this, I said I have no role to play.”

New Delhi, Feb 3: BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde's swipe at Mahatma Gandhi has irked the top party leadership and he may be forced to apologise, party sources said on Monday.

A senior BJP leader said the Karnataka leader's comments were "condemnable" and the party leadership is upset with him.

"The party has conveyed its displeasure to him and asked him to take remedial measure. Any insult to Mahatma Gandhi is unacceptable," he said.

Hegde, a former Union minister, reportedly claimed at an event in Bangaluru that the entire freedom movement was staged with the consent and support of the British, and the independence movement led by Gandhi was a "drama".

He also wondered why the Father of the Nation was called 'Mahatma' (a great soul).

The party leader said the Lok Sabha MP is a "disciplined" member of the party and will do what he has been asked to.

Hegde, known for hardline Hindutva leanings, has a history of making controversial remarks.

This man and some others like him have reached the peak of their madness.

They will not change their attitude, as they know that nobody can do any harm to them.

Therefore they will listen only to dire action what they deserve per the penal code. If required put him behind bars.

Dont harm them more, see their families.

Mangaluru, May 11: The first evocation flight from Dubai to Mangaluru amidst corona crisis is expected to bring back 177 stranded Kannadigas, mainly residents of coastal Karnataka, on Tuesday, May 12.

All the international passengers have to undergo three mandatory upon their arrival at Mangaluru International Airport - the thermal test, pulse oximetry reading and swab test.

They will be categorised based on their health condition and sent to institutional quarantine, said Sindhu B Rupesh, deputy commissioner, Dakshina Kannada.

“Those with some health issues on arrival (Category A) will be ferried through ambulances to quarantine facilities and rest in buses,” she said.

Arriving passengers will be given the option to choose their quarantine home (lodge, hostel and service apartment) based on their budget and preference.

It is learnt that Dakshina Kannada district administration has kept ready close to 1,000 rooms. The tariff for quarantine facilities is between Rs 1,200 and Rs 4,500 (including food) per day.

As per the Karnataka government, as on May 6, about 10,823 stranded expatriates are expected to return home.

The CISF, airport authorities, health and police departments will make arrangements for the arriving repatriates at MIA.

Sindhu said that the district administration has no personal information about the arriving passengers and there is high probability that they may belong to other districts or the neighbouring Kerala.

“So far, the district administration has received the missive that 177 passengers will be landing on May 12. If we are given advance details about the expats from other districts/state, the district administration will alert them to make necessary arrangements,” she said.
