Two Biharis held for manual scavenging in M'lore

Mangalore, May 3: Two persons have been arrested by the police on Thursday in connection with the manual cleaning of manholes near Lady Goschen hospital on Wednesday.

The arrested are Sanjay Mishra (38) and Ravindra Kumar Mishra (36), both natives of Bihar, who are maintaining Sulab Souchalay near Lady Goschen hospital.

The duo had used the services of two local labourers after the manhole in the vicinity was blocked. The police have booked the duo on charges of violating Manual Scavenging and Construction of Dry Latrine (Prohibition) Act, 1993. Both have also been produced before the court.

Meanwhile, the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) too has decided to file police complaints with regard to the instances of violation of the Manual Scavenging Prohibiton Act in the City limits, with private individuals making workers to get into the manholes to clean it up.

Following continued media reports on the issues, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar said that action will be taken as per the Act.

The Commissioner has said that private individuals making workers get into manholes belonging to the City Corporation is a clear violation of the Act. He clarified that cleaning of the manhole is being taken up by the MCC using machines and any complaints with regard to chocking of manhole etc will have to be brought to the notice of the MCC itself.

“Individuals do not have the right to get the manhole cleaned employing labourers. This is a punishable offence and criminal cases can be booked against the guilty,” the Commissioner said.

Mangaluru, May 6: The Karnataka NRI Forum - UAE has collected the details of those seeking to return to Karnataka amidst coronavirus lockdown.

Of these, 121 of these expats are pregnant women, 27 are senior citizens, 157 are in urgent medical need, 522 are unemployed, 377 are in the UAE on visit visa, 109 are in the UAE on expired residency visa, 30 are students and 566 others.

On Tuesday, May 5, the Government of India released a list of flight schedules for the repatriation of Indians who are stranded abroad. "...sadly we do not see any flights going from UAE to Karnataka," the KNRI said in a letter to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda, who is also a Kannadiga.

"We, Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru and KNRI have collected the information of those who are in dire condition and would like to travel immediately. We would like to bring to your attention that in this list there are pregnant women and senior citizens who are in critical conditions and are waiting to travel," the KNRI wrote, urging the Union Minister to start at least one flight to Mangaluru as the majority are from this coastal city and not from Bengaluru.

Additionally, in order to help these struggling Kannadigas, the KNRI has notified the Government of India and Government of Karnataka several times through letters and conference calls, along with the Kannadiga's helpline, UAE.

With the help of likeminded businessmen and professionals, the KNRI Forum and Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru have opened a helpline called "Kannadigas Helpline" through which they have received around 2,500 requests for food, medical, legal and other assistance.

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The Karnataka government has announced the purchase of an additional two lakh rapid test kits for COVID-19 detection at a task force meeting on Thursday.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other senior officials were present at the task force meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan.

The Chinese government has agreed to supply rapid test kits to an officially listed company, which will increase the number of tests once it arrives, Ashwathnarayan said.

Moreover, 250 kiosks will be set up in the state to collect saliva samples of a person with COVID-19 symptoms. Such kiosks will be launched one-by-one in taluks of the state.

Ashwathnarayan explained that this would increase the sample collection process and prevent the spread of disease.

Ashwathnarayan said the purchase of the required 25,000 RT-PCR kits was also approved.
He stated that COVID-19 patients should be treated at government-appointed hospitals. A separate coronavirus helpline will be made operational to address the queries of people, Ashwathnarayan said.

During Ramadan, it has been decided not to allow mass prayers, he said. And added that tracing of cases related to the Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi has been completed in the state.
