Sivaganga, May 31: A gang of so called upper-caste Hindus hacked two Dalits to death and injured six others who tried to rescue them at Kachanatham village near Manamadurai in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu last Monday night.

What was the crime of the victims? They were sitting cross-legged in the presence of a “caste Hindu” and did not present temple honours to a “caste Hindu” family!

According to police, a gang of 15 miscreants, armed with deadly weapons, entered the village around 9.30 p.m. after disconnecting power supply and attacked the residents indiscriminately, targeting particularly men. The men ran helter-skelter, and the gang hacked to death two men and inflicted serious cut injuries on at least six others, the police said.

K. Arumugam (65) died while being taken to Tiruppuvanam Government Hospital and A. Shanmuganathan (31) succumbed to injuries on way to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), Madurai. All the injured were admitted to the GRH.

The police said trouble started after the temple festival at Kachanatham on May 25 when Dalits denied temple honours to a caste Hindu family. On the next day, Chandrakumar (45), a caste Hindu, objected to Shanmuganathan and one of his friends sitting cross-legged and abused them for ‘insulting’ him, the police said.

After the police booked Chandrakumar under Section 294 (b) (uttering obscene words) of the IPC, his son C. Suman (19) decided to take revenge. With the help of his friends from Avarankadu and nearby villages, he went to Kachanatham and carried out the brutal attack, the police said.

They also damaged tiled roof and furniture in some houses in the village, where 35 Dalit families and two caste Hindu families were living, the police said. DIG N. Kamini and Ramanathapuram SP Omprakash Meena (in charge of Sivaganga) rushed to the village and brought the situation under control. Sivaganga SP T. Jayachandran, who was camping in Thoothukudi, rushed back in the early hours of Tuesday.

“A posse of 250 police personnel has been posted in the village and the situation is fully under control,” Mr. Jayachandran said. Three special teams had been formed to nab the culprits. The police had detained five accused and five others surrendered before a Madurai court, the SP said.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes had sought a report from the Collector and the SP, B. Pandiaraja, member, Vigilance Monitoring Committee, SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Ayodhya to lay the foundation of the Ram temple. He participated in the bhoomi poojan rituals at the temple site and offered prayers. He will shortly lay the foundation of the temple with a sliver brick.

From Varanasi to Tamil Nadu, many devotees have sent gifts for the ceremony, like silver bricks and coins.

Special prayers were started on Monday and will culminate with the PM laying the foundation stone for the temple. The city has been decorated with paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The Uttar Pradesh government has also made elaborate security arrangement for the event.

Apart from the state police, the NSG commandos have also been kept on stand-by. The invitations for the ceremony have been kept limited due to the coronavirus pandemic. Veteran BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi will witness the event from New Delhi via video-conferencing.

Jun 13: The Congress on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of burdening the common man with high taxes on petrol and diesel and earning Rs 2.5 lakh crore since March 5.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal said while international crude oil prices have fallen and are at the lowest level in 15 years, yet petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and common people continue to suffer under the Modi dispensation.

He said instead of passing the benefit of lower crude prices to consumers, petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the seventh straight day on June 13.

"The government has earned as much as Rs 44,000 crore in the last six days due to hike in petrol, diesel prices. Since March 5, the government has earned as much as Rs 2.5 lakh crore by way of increasing petrol, diesel prices.

"If the government had even the slightest feelings for the common man, instead of benefitting the companies and the government, the prime minister would have helped the common man with reduced fuel prices," Sibal said at an online press conference.

According to a report by Care Ratings, he said the hike effectively meant that the Central government is collecting around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in case of diesel.

The former union minister said petrol was selling at Rs 71.41 in Delhi on May 1, 2014, when international crude oil prices were USD 106.85, while on June 12, 2020, the price of petrol was Rs 75.16 when the crude oil was at USD 38.

He said central excise and VAT cumulatively account for 69 per cent of tax on fuel in India which is higher than anywhere else in the world. He said the tax of fuel in the US was 19 per cent, Japan 47 per cent, the UK 62 per cent, France 63 per cent and Germany 65 per cent.
