Two JD(S) MLAs quit, likely to join BJP ahead of Karnataka polls

Bengaluru, Jan 18: In a major blow to Janata Dal (Secular) ahead of looming Karnataka Legislative Assembly polls, two of its legislators on Thursday resigned as MLAs and expressed their wish to join Bharatiya Janata Party.

Lingasagur MLA Manappa Vajjal and Raichur City MLA Dr S Shivaraj Pati submitted their resignation letters to Legislative Assembly Secretary (in charge) S Murthy, as Speaker K B Koliwad was not present in his office.

Later, speaking to media persons, they said that JD(S) leadership had sidelined them for the last one year. "We were not taken into confidence on many occasions. The party refused to address our grouses. Hence we were forced to exit the party and join the BJP," they said.

Murthy said that he would forward the resignation letters to the Speaker.

"The letters have been addressed to the Speaker, but they have submitted the same to me. As per the rules, they are supposed to submit the letters to the Speaker directly. I have explained the rules to them, but they insisted that I should accept them. They said that they had met the Speaker last night, and that he had asked them to submit the letters to me," said Murthy.

Mangaluru, Jul 11: Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has set up an expert committee to look into the cause of deaths of covid patients in Dakshina Kannada.

The development comes after eight more fatalities including that of a CISF personnel attached to MRPL, were reported in the district on Friday.

The district has recorded 23 deaths since July 1 and 38 death cases have been reported in the district since April 19.

Of the 38 deaths, five were from outside the district. All the eight patients, who lost their battle to the virus in the district on Friday, were suffering from co-morbidities.

According to the govt bulletin on Covid-19 cases, comorbid conditions, like kidney failure, brain tumour, TB, pneumonia, liver damage, high BP, diabetes and others, were the main reasons behind the Covid-19 deaths reported in the district.

Palakkad, Jun 1: An 11-month-old boy, whose parents are placed under COVID-19 quarantine, drowned in a bucket of water in Chalissery at Palakkad district.

The toddler Muhammed Nisan was the son of Muhammad Sadiq. The parents of the child are under home quarantine after Sadiq's brother, who is living in the same home was tested positive of COVID-19.

The child was found dead in a bucket of water kept in the bathroom on Saturday around 10 pm.

Chalissery police said that ''further actions will be taken only after the test result comes out. We have filed an unnatural death case on this.''

Since the family has been quarantined, the body of the baby has been shifted to the Thrissur Medical College for COVID-19 testing.

Mangaluru, Jul 20: Former Union Minister B Janardhana Poojary has urged the people not to be afraid of coronavirus and lead a healthy lifestyle as he was discharged from hospital after completely recovering from covid-19.

The 83-year-old Billawa stalwart was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city for over two weeks as he was tested positive for the coronavirus. Today he was discharged from the hospital. 

“There is no need to be worried about the covid-19. People should consume nutritious and immunity boosting food and lead a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

He also urged the people to follow all necessary guidelines such as maintaining physical distance, wearing masks and washing hands frequently to prevent the spread of the virus.
