Two leopards attack and kill 60 sheep in a day, injure a dozen more

Kolar, Mar 1: Farmers and officials of the Forest Department blamed leopards for the death of nearly 60 sheep in Naganala village near Kolar on Sunday night.

According to local residents, around 10 p.m. on Sunday, at least two leopards attacked and killed a herd of 59 sheep and injured 12 others.

The sheep belonged to Naganala Ramesh, a farmer. On hearing bleats, his brother Pille Gowda rushed out to see a leopard fleeing.

Just four days ago, another sheep was allegedly killed by a leopard in Mangasandra village nearby.

Considering the large number of deaths, the forest officials believed that at least two leopards must have been there. The leopards apparently fled to the nearby hills where caves are located sheltering the felines.

“The death of so many sheep has caused loss of over Rs. 3 lakh,” Mr. Ramesh told media persons on Monday.

Honorary Wildlife Warden K.N. Tyagaraj, who inspected the spot, said, “There are possibilities of leopards straying into the area in search of dogs, which become easy prey.”

Dogs are found in large numbers in the area as the waste from poultry farms and abattoirs are dumped there.

Range Forest Officer Santhosh has assured the villagers that cages would be kept to trap the leopards. The forest staff would be deputed to guard the area, he said.

The local residents have been warned by the officials to not venture out at night.

Bengaluru, Jul 13:  Karnataka Deputy chief minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan on Monday urged chief minister BS Yediyurappa to cancel the license of private hospitals and private medical colleges which did not hand over their 50 per cent beds, to the government, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's Office said.

On June 26, the Karnataka government reserved about 50 per cent for COVID-19 patients in some private hospitals in Bengaluru.

Earlier in the day, former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that the state government should provide vitamin C drug, Ayush Ministry-certified immunity boosters and sanitisers to every household in the wake of the coronavirus spread.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka has recorded 38,843 cases of COVID-19 to date.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty has sent the second consignment of N95 Masks, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Sanitisers worth about Rs 73 lakhs, City police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha said on Sunday.

"These will be primarily used by Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics of Wenlock Hospital here and masks by the frontline staff of ASHA and police at risk of exposure to the virus,” Dr Harsha tweeted on Sunday.

The district has received the first consignment with critical medical equipment worth Rs 28 lakh from the Infosys foundation on Saturday, March 28.

Mangaluru, Apr 16: An old refrigerator has been turned into a "disinfection chamber" by researchers who are striving to come up with solutions to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

Dr Arun M Isloor, head of Chemistry Department, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, along with research scholar Syed Ibrahim has come up with the device which can disinfect items kept inside it.

"We have named this as ZERO-COV," Dr Isloor said.

He says the device ensures 99.9 per cent destruction of microorganisms present on the surface of items.

"We can keep items like vegetables, currency notes, books or envelopes inside the chamber. Switching on the chamber for 15 minutes ensures 99.9 per cent destruction of microorganisms present in the surface of the items," Dr Isloor added.
