Two leopards attack and kill 60 sheep in a day, injure a dozen more

Kolar, Mar 1: Farmers and officials of the Forest Department blamed leopards for the death of nearly 60 sheep in Naganala village near Kolar on Sunday night.

According to local residents, around 10 p.m. on Sunday, at least two leopards attacked and killed a herd of 59 sheep and injured 12 others.

The sheep belonged to Naganala Ramesh, a farmer. On hearing bleats, his brother Pille Gowda rushed out to see a leopard fleeing.

Just four days ago, another sheep was allegedly killed by a leopard in Mangasandra village nearby.

Considering the large number of deaths, the forest officials believed that at least two leopards must have been there. The leopards apparently fled to the nearby hills where caves are located sheltering the felines.

“The death of so many sheep has caused loss of over Rs. 3 lakh,” Mr. Ramesh told media persons on Monday.

Honorary Wildlife Warden K.N. Tyagaraj, who inspected the spot, said, “There are possibilities of leopards straying into the area in search of dogs, which become easy prey.”

Dogs are found in large numbers in the area as the waste from poultry farms and abattoirs are dumped there.

Range Forest Officer Santhosh has assured the villagers that cages would be kept to trap the leopards. The forest staff would be deputed to guard the area, he said.

The local residents have been warned by the officials to not venture out at night.

Udupi, Feb 27: Silver ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh were stolen from the Badakere Laxmi Janardhana temple under Byndoor police station limits in Udupi district. 

The theft which reportedly took place on Wednesday late night, came to light today morning.

Notably, this is the fourth incident reported during the last two months.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Minister D K Shivakumar has demanded resignation of Minister In-Charge of COVID-19 for his alleged irresponsible comment, despite holding a responsible post.

Mr Shivakumar's comments came after Dr Sudhakar on Sunday shared a picture of him and his children in a swimming pool, on Twitter with a caption, ''After a long time joined my children for swimming hope maintaining social distance here as well…hahaha.''

However, Dr Sudhakar deleted the tweet from his account, soon after he was criticised for sharing such a picture, when the country is facing a health crisis.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: Leaving the organisers of an event to protest against the CAA, NRC and NRP here red-faced, a young woman on Thursday reportedly raised "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan in the presence of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who denounced her action and asserted "we are for India".

The woman, identified as Amulya, allegedly asked people to shout with her "Pakistan Zindabad" after the organisers of the event under the banner of "Save Constitution" invited her to address the gathering soon after Owaisi came on the stage.

Soon Owaisi rushed to snatch the mike from her hands and was joined by others who tried to remove her from the state.

But the woman was adamant and raised the slogan again repeatedly. Later, the police stepped in and removed her from the dais.

Owaisi then addressed the gathering, saying he did not agree with the woman.

"Neither me nor my party has any link with her. We denounce her. The organisers should not have invited her here. If I knew this, I would not have come here. We are for India and we no way support our enemy nation Pakistan. Our entire drive is to save India," the AIMIM MP said.

JD(S) corporator Imran Pasha claimed she was planted by some rival group to disrupt the event.

The woman, he said, was not in the list of speakers and demanded that the police investigate the matter seriously.

Sources say Amulya hails from Chikkamagaluru and her parents have always been in the forefront of taking on government and its policies for well over a decade. 

As per local TV reports, the student was taken to Upparpet police station, but later shifted to an undisclosed destination for more questioning.
