Two leopards attack and kill 60 sheep in a day, injure a dozen more

Kolar, Mar 1: Farmers and officials of the Forest Department blamed leopards for the death of nearly 60 sheep in Naganala village near Kolar on Sunday night.

According to local residents, around 10 p.m. on Sunday, at least two leopards attacked and killed a herd of 59 sheep and injured 12 others.

The sheep belonged to Naganala Ramesh, a farmer. On hearing bleats, his brother Pille Gowda rushed out to see a leopard fleeing.

Just four days ago, another sheep was allegedly killed by a leopard in Mangasandra village nearby.

Considering the large number of deaths, the forest officials believed that at least two leopards must have been there. The leopards apparently fled to the nearby hills where caves are located sheltering the felines.

“The death of so many sheep has caused loss of over Rs. 3 lakh,” Mr. Ramesh told media persons on Monday.

Honorary Wildlife Warden K.N. Tyagaraj, who inspected the spot, said, “There are possibilities of leopards straying into the area in search of dogs, which become easy prey.”

Dogs are found in large numbers in the area as the waste from poultry farms and abattoirs are dumped there.

Range Forest Officer Santhosh has assured the villagers that cages would be kept to trap the leopards. The forest staff would be deputed to guard the area, he said.

The local residents have been warned by the officials to not venture out at night.

Udupi, July 23: A 70-year-old woman, who had tested positive for coronavirus, passed away last night in Udupi taking the district’s covid-19 death toll to 12.

The deceased was a resident of Chantharu in Brahmavar. She was an asthma patient. For past few days, she was suffering from cold and fever. 

Her throat swabs were sent for testing and the report came positive last evening. She breathed her last at home even before being shifted to hospital. 

The woman has two daughters and both of them are married. Due to the fear of virus, none of her relatives were ready to touch her body.

Meanwhile, Dr Premananda K of district health department reportedly sought help of the activists of Popular Front of India (PFI). 

Under the supervision of PFI’s medical wing in-charge Muneer Kalmadi, the body was shifted to the district hospital with all necessary precautionary measures.

Mysuru, Jan 27: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday refused to field questions on the state’s finances, merely saying his budget on March 5 will do the talking. The question came in the wake of Siddaramaiah, leader of the opposition, claiming recently that the state’s coffers were dry and its finances were in the doldrums.

However, Yediyurappa insisted the state’s finances were sound and it will be better once promises made by the business community during his trip to Davos turn into concrete investment.

“I will present the budget for 2020-21 on March 5. People will then know about the state’s financial position,” Yediyurappa said during a visit to Suttur Mutt on Sunday. “I will answer Siddaramaiah’s comments during the forthcoming budget session of the state legislature. The Davos meet I attended will benefit the state immensely. It will bring huge investments that will promote industry and agriculture growth and various job-generation activities.”

Chikkamagaluru, May 4: KSRTC resumed its service from Chikkamagaluru district headquarters to taluk centres amidst the lockdown to contain COVID-19 on Monday. Chikkamagaluru is in the green zone.

Hundreds of passengers travelled to Sringeri, Mudigere, Koppa and Kadur taluks since morning from the Chikkamagaluru city.

According to KSRTC Divisional Controller, passengers who wish to travel to taluk centres have to register half an hour prior to the journey. 

Sanitisers were placed in the bus stand in Chikkamagaluru to sanitise hands before boarding the buses.
