Two leopards attack and kill 60 sheep in a day, injure a dozen more

Kolar, Mar 1: Farmers and officials of the Forest Department blamed leopards for the death of nearly 60 sheep in Naganala village near Kolar on Sunday night.

According to local residents, around 10 p.m. on Sunday, at least two leopards attacked and killed a herd of 59 sheep and injured 12 others.

The sheep belonged to Naganala Ramesh, a farmer. On hearing bleats, his brother Pille Gowda rushed out to see a leopard fleeing.

Just four days ago, another sheep was allegedly killed by a leopard in Mangasandra village nearby.

Considering the large number of deaths, the forest officials believed that at least two leopards must have been there. The leopards apparently fled to the nearby hills where caves are located sheltering the felines.

“The death of so many sheep has caused loss of over Rs. 3 lakh,” Mr. Ramesh told media persons on Monday.

Honorary Wildlife Warden K.N. Tyagaraj, who inspected the spot, said, “There are possibilities of leopards straying into the area in search of dogs, which become easy prey.”

Dogs are found in large numbers in the area as the waste from poultry farms and abattoirs are dumped there.

Range Forest Officer Santhosh has assured the villagers that cages would be kept to trap the leopards. The forest staff would be deputed to guard the area, he said.

The local residents have been warned by the officials to not venture out at night.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah and other leaders are likely to make the final decision on the name of the next Congress president of Karnataka soon, said party leader Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday.

"He (Siddaramaiah) has met all the leaders and I think soon they will make a decision. It has already been delayed, it should not have been delayed so much. I am sure high command will take a decision on this," Rao told reporters here.

Both Siddaramaiah and Gundu Rao had resigned from their posts, Leader of Congress Legislature Party and KPCC president, after the party's drubbing in the bye-elections held for 15 Assembly seats last year.

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Eight people were arrested on Friday on charges of illegally arriving at Addur near the city through boat violating the lockdown.
 
Police said that Yakub and other seven in his group have been charged with criminal cases for entering the city illegally as the border between Kerala and Karnataka has been sealed and a ban on travel between the States is in effect.
 
The group had arrived through boat despite there was ban. Police are now investigating the existence of a gang who are illegally transporting people through the sea across State borders.

New Delhi, Jul 21: A 42-year-old contractual doctor, who was working with Delhi government's National Health Mission, passed away yesterday due to covid-19.

Dr Javed Ali had been on the frontline in the fight against the highly contagious illness since March. He tested positive for coronavirus on June 24 and was hospitalised for treatment over the next three weeks.

For the last 10 days, he was on a ventilator. Yesterday morning, Dr Ali breathed his last at the AIIMS trauma centre. He is survived by his wife and two children - a six-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter.

"I am proud of my husband. He kept working till the end and he is a martyr. He did not take even one day off since March. He worked even on Eid," Dr Heena Kausar, his wife, told media persons.

The cost for the initial treatment at the private hospital was also borne by the family. "No treatment cost was covered when he was at a private hospital initially. We spent around Rs 6 lakh from our own pockets," she said.
