Two miscreants who put cockroach in food at Indira Canteen arrested

Bengaluru, Oct 23: Two auto-rickshaw drivers have been arrested for dropping a cockroach in the food served at Indira Canteen to seek "publicity".

Hemanth and Devaraj, along with two others, went to have food at Indira Canteen in Kamakshipalya on Friday and created a ruckus when they found a cockroach in their meal, the police said. They then threatened people serving food, besides urging others not to eat.

The police said CCTV cameras installed inside the canteen showed Hemanth bringing the cockroach with him and putting it in the food.  Devaraj knew this but supported Hemanth's claim, the police said.

Even though the accused officially do not belong to BJP, they are said to be the right wing supporters.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is executing the programme in the city, handed over the video footage to the police and lodged a complaint against Hemanth and his friends.

"We have arrested Hemanth and Devaraj. They are autorickshaw drivers from Kamakshipalya. During interrogation they revealed that they did it to seek publicity," a police officer said.

The state government launched Indira Canteens on August 15, offering food at subsidised rates. Breakfast and meals are served at Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively.

At present, the scheme is being implemented in Bengaluru municipal limits.

Based on its success, Indira Canteens will be set up in all district and taluk headquarters from January 1.

Madikeri, Apr 22: The quality of water in the River Cauvery in Kodagu district has improved significantly following the nationwide Lockdown.

The discharge of effluents from home stays and resorts situated on the banks of the river in the district has stopped due to lack of visitors. The discharge of waste water had made the river impure all these years.

The suspension of boat ride in Dubare has reduced the pollution from diesel motorboats in the river. For the last few years, the water quality of the river had reached 'C' category from 'B' category during the summer.

Madikeri, Feb 23: Back-to-back floods and landslides in the last two years, has led to a fall in the number of tourists coming to the coffee-growing region of Kodagu, forcing the district administration to intervene and take confidence-building measures, telling tourists that Kodagu was safe to visit.

According to the statistics of the Karnataka State Tourism Department, Kodagu recorded a moderately good number of tourists in 2018 and 2019, the years that the district witnessed devastating floods and landslides.

The Department’s statistics reveal that 17 lakh tourists visited Kodagu in 2018 and 18 lakh in 2019. This means the flood-ravaged years did attract tourists contrary to what the stakeholders had claimed.

Mangaluru, June 6: Four persons were arrested by the Mulki police today in connection with the murder of Abdul Lateef, a 38-year-old businessman.

The arrested are: Mohammed Hasim (27), Nissar alias Riyaz (33), and Mohammed Razim (24), all residents of Mulki, and Aboobakar Siddique (27), a resident of Udupi.

The weapons and vehicles used for murder have been confiscated. Investigation is in progress to find out the motive behind the murder and the arrest of remaining accused.

Abdul Lateef, his father-in-law Muneer, latter’s son Ijaz and relative Imran were returning from Vijaya Bank at Mulki when a gang of nine miscreants waylaid their car and attacked with sharp weapons.

The gang comprised of Hakeem, Wafa, Asim, Siddique, Nissar, Bava, Farhan, Razeem and Siddiq.  While four of them are arrested, police continued hunt to nab other accused.

Abdul Lateef breathed his last while being taken to hospital. Others are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
