Two ‘missing’ MLAs reach Vidhana Soudha ahead of floor test, join Congress camp

Bengaluru, May 19: The floor test in the Karnataka Assembly is scheduled for 4 pm today, as per the Supreme Court order. Senior BJP MLA K.G. Bopaiah, who was appointed as the Pro Tem Speaker by Governor Vajubhai Vala, will oversee the proceedings, which will also be telecast live.

BJP, with 104 seats, is seven short of the required number of 111. The Congress with 78 MLAs, the JD(S) with 36 and three others are also individually not in a position to form the government.

Assembly session began at 11 am on Saturday morning and the newly-elected MLAs took were sworn into the Karnataka Assembly. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was sworn in alone on Friday morning by Governor Vajubhai Vala.

Pratapgouda Patil, the Congress MLA from Maski who went missing and was said to have joined the BJP camp, reached Vidhana soudha a few minutes earlier, sources said. He was said to have been holed up in a private hotel in Bengaluru.

Congress leaders issued the party whip to the MLA. BJP MLA S.R. Viswanath was seen trying to take the MLA away, but he refused and joined the Congress camp.

Anand Singh, the missing Congress MLA also reached Vidhana Soudha, along with his wife and son. He was welcomed by D.K. Shivakumar and taken inside.

Massive security arrangements

As per the directions of the apex court, the police have made massive security arrangements in and around the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of state legislature, for the smooth conduct of the floor test, reports news agency.

Public entry to the Vidhana Soudha has been restricted and officials and staff of the Secretariat are being allowed to enter the premises after thorough checks.

120 marshals of legislative assembly and 80 marshals of legislative council have been deployed today.

Mangaluru | Miscreants pour kerosene on 200kg beef, thrash driver after waylaying vehicle

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains. Will you be loyal to your duty and promise. We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku. You should follow the law and treat everyone equally. There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar. The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists. We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.

Mangaluru: Fishing season to be rescheduled due to COVID-19 outbreak

Mangaluru, May 2: Fishermen in the coastal districts fear that the fishing season ending on May 31 every year might be rescheduled early this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement department of fisheries on sturday said fishing season is closed for 61 days every year before the arrival of the monsoon.

As per the data with the Fisheries Department, this year the number of fishes caught has set a record.

College girl who consumed poison over exam delay dies in hospital

Udupi, June 21: A graduation student, who had attempted suicide two weeks ago under depression following the postponement of examinations due to covid-19, breathed his last at a private hospital yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala, a final year degree student of First Grade College, Muniyal. She was a resident of Mathibettu near Vagranga in Hebri taluk.

According to sources, she had studied hard to clear the examinations. The postponement of examinations led her to depression.

She consumed poison at her house on June 8. She was immediately rushed to Manipal hospital where she breathed her last on June 20. A case has been registered in Hebri Police Station.
