Two trekkers from Hyderabad missing in Bababudangiri

August 11, 2015

Chikkamagaluru/Hyderabad: Aug 11: Two group leaders of a Hyderabad-based adventure club with several years of experience in trekking and mountaineering are missing since Sunday in the Bababudangiri hills region.

missingThe senior trekkers, Vivek Gupta (30) and Sashidhar (27), were leading a team of 10 people from Greater Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) on a 50 km trek through Mullayanagiri, Bababu¬dangiri and Hebbe Falls in the Western Ghats.

The team, including an IRS officer, reached Bababudangiri guest house on Saturday evening and began their trek from Gaalikere on Sunday. Only eight members of the team, along with the IRS officer, returned in the afternoon.

Officials from the forest and police department, and members of Adventure Club, Chikkamagaluru, have formed three teams to trace the trekkers. The teams have been carrying out search operations in and around Gaalikere since Sunday night.

Heavy rain, leaches and mist has affected the search operation. During the search operations on Monday in Gaalikere, four staff members of Muthodi forest range went missing which led to a tense situation, but they later managed to rejoin the team.

SP K Santhosh Babu said: “Two trekkers went missing from Sunday. The search operation is on. There is no trace of trekkers till Monday night.”

Trying a new route

Suresh Kochattil, co-organiser of GHAC said: “It is surprising that two of our senior trekkers with lots of experience who were on their way to find an alternative trekking route went missing, while all the new members returned.”

Gupta, the assistant organiser and event host, is a Data Analyst by profession. He joined GHAC in 2012 and has organised more than 150 trekking events.

Sashidhar, a Java programmer, has undertaken an expedition to Mt Everest base camp.

The two trekkers are equipped with compasses as GPS devises do not work in thick forests as the heavy canopy stalls satellite vision.

Suresh said Gupta and Sashidhar have been trained by the Army in survival skills.

“Both can survive for three days without any help as both eat anything to survive and use stars to find their way out from any dense forest,” he said.

“If they have entered the forest we are confident that they would survive and find their way out,” said Diyanat Ali, co-organiser who is leading one of the search parties. However, in case someone has broken a leg, then they might have to wait till help arrives.

Bengaluru, May 25: After facing flak from the opposition for skipping quarantine rules to contain COVID-19 spread, Union Minister Sadananda Gowda on Monday said there are certain exemption clauses for those who hold certain responsible posts, adding that he cannot go under quarantine as he has to ensure medical supply in every part of the country.

"Guidelines are applicable to all citizens, but there are certain exemption clauses, for those who hold certain responsible posts," Gowda told media on being asked about allegations by opposition parties that he did not go to required institutional quarantine after domestic air travel from Delhi to Bengaluru.

"I am a Minister and I am heading Pharmaceutical Ministry. If the supply of medicines and other things is not proper then what doctors can do for patients, is it not a failure of government? It' is my responsibility to ensure the supply of medicines to each corner of the country," he said.

Earlier in the day, the BJP MP, who arrived at Bengaluru airport from Delhi and straight away got into his car and drove to his residence. He skipped the institutional quarantine measures as set by the Central government.

Karnataka Director General of Police Praveen Sood said: "Incoming domestic flight passengers from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh will undergo 7-day institutional Quarantine followed by home quarantine."

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.
