U T Khader leads International Yoga Day celebrations in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 21: Urban Development and Housing Minister U T Khader inaugurated the international yoga day celebrations organised by the district administration and department of Ayush at Mangala indoor stadium in the city today. 

He performed yoga with Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Manggaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Khader said that it was necessary to practise yoga for a healthy life. 

Reminding that yoga is a contribution of India to the world, the minister said that regular practice of yoga helps to achieve perfect balance between mind and body. 

Across Mangaluru

The Yoga Day was also celebrated across schools, colleges, industrial units and social organisations here on Thursday.

Among the few to hold the programme early in the day was the Ramakrishna Mutt where the event was conducted by yoga instructor Mohan Kumblekar. Mr. Kumblekar, who has been conducting yoga sessions at the mutt for several years now, started the session at 6.15 a.m. with warm-up exercises which were followed by several asanas. The session ended at 7.30 a.m. with meditation.

A session by personnel of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited was held at the MRPL Recreation Centre between 6.15 a.m. and 7.15 a.m. The session was conducted by a yoga teacher from Mangaluru University. A separate session was held for students for Delhi Public School, personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force and family members of MRPL employees. MRPL on Wednesday started a week-long yoga programme, according to a press release.

Among the several educational institutions that held yoga sessions on Thursday included the one organised by Nitte Deemed to be University’s NSS wing on the K.S. Hegde Hospital campus in Deralakatte. Following the yoga session, the university felicitated Iddya Karunasagar, Senior Director, International Relations of the University, who has been practising yoga for over four decades. The university also felicitated Nhehern Acharya, the third year Bachelor of Physiotherapy student from Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy, who has won gold medal for two years in a row in the Artistic Display Yoga Competition organised by the International Yoga Federation.

The NCC units of St. Aloysius College celebrated the day on the college premises. Zeena, Assistant Professor of the College’s Commerce Department, conducted the yoga session. Administration Officer of NCC Mangaluru Group, Lt. Colonel Amith and Principal of the College Praveen Martis participated in the programme.

Senior Yoga teacher Gopalakrishna Delampady conducted an hour-long yoga session at the Expert PU College in Kodailbail. Students from Excellent PU College too celebrated International Yoga Day.

Konkan Railway Corporation organised the celebrations at the Konkan Rail Vihar in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Sanjay Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of the corporation, participated in the programme. Similar celebrations were held at the regional offices of Konkan Railway in Karwar and Ratnagiri, a press release said.

Indian Coast Guard also celebrated the day. A Coast Guard release said that earlier it had organised the practice sessions on Yoga on June 10, June 17 and June 20 for officers and men in uniform to help acclimatise them to yogic postures. The participants had been introduced to Yogasanas, Kapalbhati, Pranayama, Dhyana, Sankalpa and Meditation as per the common protocol issued by the government.

S.S. Dasila, Commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, also performed yoga along with other Coast Guard personnel. Uma Prashanth, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru, was the guest.

All officers and men in uniform from all Coast Guard Air Enclave, 75 Air Cushion Vehicle Squadron, Indian Coast Guard Ships Savitri Bai Phule, Rajdoot, Amartya and Kasturba Gandhi at the disposal of No 3 Coast Guard District Karnataka at New Mangaluru participated in the event.

“Braving the rough and high seas, newly based state-of-the-art indigenously built ship, Vikram, showcased the importance of Yoga in facing the challenges posed by high seas so as to enhance a safe and secure coast for the people while on routine patrol off the coast of Karnataka and Lakshadweep and Minicoy group of Islands,” the release said.

Yenepoya University and Father Muller Education Institutions, also celebrated the day.

Newsroom, Apr 30: Beleaguered billionaire B R Shetty, who went into hiding after after a multi-billion fraud at UAE-based NMC Health came to light, has now put the blame on his companies employees.

The former chairman of the Abu Dhabi headquartered hospital operator said, investigations he commissioned found following things:

1. The fraudulent creation and operating of bank accounts in my name including many fraudulent transfers that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

2. The fraudulent creation of loans, personal guarantees, cheques and bank transfers in my name, and using my forged signature, that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

3. The creation and set-up of companies in my name that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of, and that were seemingly created with the express intention to commit or conceal fraud.

4. The fraudulent creation of powers of attorney, and the misuse of existing powers of attorney, again in my name, that I that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

5. The creation and provision to me of false and misleading financial statements and information regarding the performance of some of my private companies and investments by members of my own management team.

6. The payments of expenses using my private companies and personal bank accounts, I believe to hide the true financials of the public companies."

This is the first time Dr. Shetty, who is reportedly hiding in India for the last couple of months, issued a statement based on investigations he commissioned privately. He had brought in a consultancy to conduct it after initial revelations came to light that NMC Health had not been fully transparent with its finances.

Dr. Shetty had stepped down as executive chairman after the then Board of Directors barred him from attending any meetings. “I intend to work tirelessly to clear my name and assist any authorities in getting to the truth and help them ensure that misappropriated or missing funds are returned by the perpetrators to their rightful owners,” said Dr. Shetty.

This month, ADCB, which has the highest exposure among UAE banks to NMC Health, brought charges against five former officials, including ex-board of directors, with Abu Dhabi prosecution. The former CEOs of NMC Health and Finablr are also currently not in the UAE.

Mangaluru, Jan 26: Minister for Muzrai, Inland Water Transport, Port and Fisheries Kota Srinivas Poojary in his Republic Day address praised the Dakshina Kannada district and Mangaluru city units of Karnataka police.

Poojary, also district in-charge minister, was speaking after unfurling the National flag as a part of 71st Republic Day celebrations held at Nehru Maidan in the city on Sunday.

He said that the police department had been successful in tackling the challenges posed by anti-social elements to the law and order situation from time to time.

He also lauded the police department for effectively handling the recent bomb threat incident at Mangalore International Airport.

He said, the state government is committed to protect the welfare of the oppressed and backward classes, minority, women, farmers, differently abled and the elderly.

“People from all these sections are guaranteed government benefits in one way or the other,’’ the minister said and called upon the people to strive towards social harmony and to help the departments concerned in keeping anti-social elements away.

The state government will release its share of Rs 4,000 to the farmers under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana, to which Central government has credited Rs 6,000 per eligible farmer. As many as 1,33,247 farmers are benefited by the scheme in the district, the minister said.

Stating that the coastal region of Karnataka has been placed in the ninth position in the country in fisheries, Poojary said that the coastal line of Karnataka, comprising backwaters and inland water, houses immense resource for fishes.

“Thrust will be laid on boat tourism and development of ports in the coastal districts,’’ he said.

The minister, meanwhile, said that the state government had implemented various programmes for the development of fishermen community.

“Loans to the tune of Rs 60.54 crore availed by 23,000 women belonging to fishing community will be waived. Diesel subsidies amounting to Rs 28.09 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of owners of 954 mechanized boats during the year 2019-20. As many as 2,500 houses have been sanctioned under Matsyashraya scheme,’’ Poojary said.

Dakshina Kannada district has incurred a loss of Rs 893 crore during the recent floods. Financial assistance has been extended to 1,914 families affected by the floods to buy essential commodities, he said.

Services recognised

The minister thanked the Central government for announcing Padma Vibhushan awards to late Vishwesha Theertha Swami and George Fernandez and Padma Shri award to Harekala Hajabba.

‘’The selfless services to the nation by these stalwarts have been recognised,’’ he said. Educationist Harekala Hajabba was felicitated on the occasion.

Zilla Panchayat President Meenakshi Shanthigodu, MLAs D Vedavyas Kamath, Dr Y Bharat Shetty and U T Khader, MLCs Ivan D’Souza and S L Bhoje Gowda were present. Various troupes conducted march past on the occasion. Schoolchildren took part in cultural programmes.

Puttur, June 19: A 32-year-old woman in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district died due to complications caused by dengue yesterday.

The deceased is Naseema (32), wife of Nazeer Master, a resident of Parpunja village in the taluk.

She was not well for past few weeks and she was diagnosed with dengue fever with chills a week ago.

Initially she underwent treatment at a hospital in Puttur. After her condition worsened, she was shifted to a private hospital in Deralakatte.

However, she breathed her last without responding to any treatment last night.

Naseema is the second victim of the mosquito-borne infection in Puttur taluk this month. Last week, dengue had claimed the life of a woman in Bettampady village in the same taluk.
