Dubai, Oct 27: In Dubai, anyone caught selling fireworks can be jailed for up to three months, or handed down fines of up to Dh5,000. The Dubai Police, however, have noted that the practice has largely been curbed as a result of awareness initiatives held among the community.

In Dubai, event organisers need to have the permission of the Dubai Police and Dubai Municipality before using them.

Heavily regulated

Over the last few years, Dubai Municipality inspectors have been cracking down on the illegal sale of fireworks during Diwali.

The police have noted that fireworks can threaten the safety of both people and property, and cause material damage as well as environmental pollution.

Fireworks pose great dangers to youngsters who are ignorant of the consequences and risks of dealing with them.

Punishment and fines

In Dubai, anyone caught selling fireworks can be jailed for up to three months, or handed down fines of up to Dh5,000.

Consequences

The consequences of using firecrackers include severe burns and injuries that can cause permanent disability and permanent hearing difficulties caused by loud sound. Firecrackers also cause severe injuries to eyes and face as these can rupture the eyeball, burn the eye and face, cut eyelids and cause corneal abrasions.

Police warn children against use of fireworks

The police have reminded parents that it is their duty to protect their children from the dangers of firecrackers. They need to cooperate with the police by monitoring their children and forbidding them from buying and using firecrackers.

Parents of children caught using firecrackers can be held accountable for their actions, the police warned.

The police also urged the public to report the use of firecrackers or stores that sell them.

In the past, there have been cases where violators found stocking firecrackers were arrested and referred to courts. In 2015, the police seized 23 tonnes of firecrackers, compared to 28 tonnes in 2014 and 13 tonnes in 2013.

Wayanad, Jan 30: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday compared Mahatma Gandhi assassin Nathuram Godse with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying both believed in the same ideology.

Gandhi, at an anti-CAA rally here, launched a scathing attack on Modi and said he was making Indians to prove that they are Indians.

Addressing participants at "Save the Constitution" march at Kalpetta in Wayanad, his Lok Sabha constituency on Martyr's Day, Gandhi said there was no difference between Godse and Modi.

"Today, an ignorant man is trying to challenge Gandhi's ideology. He is creating an atmosphere of hatred. The ideology is same. Nathuram Godse and Narendra Modi, they believe in the same ideology. There is no difference except that Modi does not have the guts to say he believes in the ideology of Godse," the Wayanad MP said.

Attacking the Prime Minister on the new Citizenship Law, Gandhi questioned Modi and asked who was he to ask Indians to prove that they were Indians.

"Indians are being made to prove that they are Indians. Who is Narendra Modi to decide who is an Indian. Who gave Modi the licence to ask for my Indianness? I know I am an Indian and I don't have to prove it to anyone. Likewise, 1.4 billion Indians do not have to prove that they are Indians," he said.

The Congress leader led the march here as part of efforts to intensify the party's protests against CAA in the state.

Protests condemning the Israeli plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank are set to take place in the United States and Europe on the same day prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to begin the process.

The demonstrations will be held on Wednesday in Chicago, San Diego, Brooklyn, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Other Western cities will also witness similar protests, including Toronto, Madrid and Valencia.

Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and American Muslims for Palestine are among the pro-Palestinian groups organizing the protests.

The Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, one of the organizers, urged "direct actions and popular mobilizations in [Palestinian] refugee camps, cities and villages," and professed "loyalty to the martyrs" on its call for the events.

Another group, Al-Awda or the Palestinian Right to Return Coalition, decried "72 years of genocide, ethnic cleansing and dispossession" of Palestinians.

It also tied their demonstrations to the protests against anti-black racism in the US and beyond.

"We demand the defunding and dismantling of US police alongside the defunding and dismantling of Zionist colonialism and racist Israeli apartheid," Al-Awda said on its website.

Netanyahu has set July 1 as the date for the start of cabinet discussions on the annexation plan.

He has been driven ahead by US President Donald Trump, who unveiled a “peace” plan for the Middle East in January that effectively sidelines the Palestinians altogether.

The plan, which Trump himself has described as the “deal of the century,” envisions Jerusalem al-Quds as “Israel’s undivided capital” and allows the Tel Aviv regime to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank and the Jordan Valley. The plan also denies Palestinian refugees the right of return to their homeland, among other controversial terms.

The Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.
