Mangaluru, Feb 20: Hours after calling UB City assault victim a ‘BJP worker’, the saffron party supremo Amit Shah on Tuesday candidly admitted that his statement was far from the truth.

Shah, who is touring coastal Karnataka as part of BJP’s campaign for upcoming Karnataka assembly polls, earlier in the day had referred to Vidwath, who was thrashed by Shantinagar Congress MLA NA Haris’ son Mohammed Nalapad and others at Farzi Café in Bengaluru’s UB City over a trivial issue, as a ‘BJP worker’.

Shah’s statement had embarrassed Karnataka BJP as the family members of Vidwath made it clear that he was not part of any political outfit.

Replying to the queries of media persons at Surathkal, on the outskirts of the city, Amit Shah admitted that his statement was wrong. “What I said is wrong. He is not a BJP worker,” Shah said.

However, he maintained that chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress government was selectively targeting BJP workers in Karnataka.

According to sources, union minister DV Sadananda Gowda, who was present with the party chief, reportedly advised the latter to withdraw his statement to avert a potential controversy.

Amit shah admitted his blunter because the victim is still alive. If the victim was dead, Amit Shah would have called him a prominent BJP leader.

Bengaluru, May 10 The asymptomatic and healthy people among international passengers will now have to undergo institutional quarantine for 14 days, according to the new standard operating procedure (SoP) issued by the Karnataka government for a third time.

The SoP, which has been revised twice, was issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department on Saturday, May 9.

The international passengers will be divided into two categories upon their arrival at the airports. Symptomatic will be directly sent to the covid-19 hospitals. Asymptomatic will not be allowed to go home directly. They will be sent for mandatory quarantine for 14 days in hotels and guest houses.

Earlier, international passengers had to undergo seven days of institutional and seven days of home quarantine.

Passengers will also be tested only twice — once on arrival and for the second time on the 14th day — instead of the earlier decision to test thrice. They will be discharged from the facility if they test negative.

The first group of 350 people are expected to arrive from London at 3 am on Monday at the Kempegowda International Airport, said Lakshman Reddy, Joint Director, Social Welfare Department.

Flights are expected from Singapore on May 13, Jeddah on May 14 and San Francisco on May 15.

Among the stranded include 4,408 tourists and visitors, 3,084 students, 2,784 migrants and 557 ship crew.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday said an ideal trade-off needs to be reached between new media -- which is fast and popular -- and traditional media which has developed skills to authenticate a news report, which is a costly operation.

Addressing the fourth edition of ‘the Huddle’ – the annual thought conclave of the Hindu here, he asserted that the internet and social media had democratised journalism and revitalised democracy, but had also led to many anxieties.

While the new media was fast and popular and people could choose what they wanted to watch, hear or read, traditional media would have to introspect on its role in society and find ways to earn the reader’s full trust again as "the project of democracy was incomplete without informed citizens – which means, without unbiased journalism."

Debate and discussion were internalised in India’s social psyche to arrive at truth since time immemorial, he said.

"There is no doubt that perception of truth is conditioned by circumstances. The conditions that cloud the truth’s positions are effectively dispelled by a contestation of ideas through debate, discussion and scientific temper. Prejudices and violence vitiate the search for truth."

Expressing happiness to attend ‘The Huddle’ organised by The Hindu, he said the Hindu group of publications had been relentlessly aiming to capture the essence of this great country through its responsible and ethical journalism. He commended them for their insistence on sticking to the five basic principles of journalism – truth-telling, freedom and independence, justice, humaneness and contributing to the social good, an official release here said.

Mr Kovind said dogmas and personal prejudices distorted the truth. In the 150th year of Gandhiji’s birth, he asked all to ponder over this question: "will it not be proper to pursue truth itself as the ideology? Gandhiji has shown us the path by walking ceaselessly in search of truth which would ultimately encompass every positive attribute that enriches the universe."
