Uddhav compares Sharad Pawar to Hafiz Saeed

June 11, 2014

Mumbai, Jun 11: Hitting back at NCP leader Sharad Pawar who blamed BJP's rise for the recent mob violence in Pune which left an IT professional dead, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today equated him with JuD chief Hafiz Saeed and said he has "lost his sense of proportion" after the poll debacle.Uddhav

"Pawar is speaking like Hafeez Saeed. After the violence following objectionable posts in social media, Pawar said such forces have raised their head after (Narendra) Modi government came to power.

"It is difficult to predict what Pawar will say and when. His sense of proportion has gone for a toss after his party's debacle in Lok Sabha polls," Uddhav said in an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamana.

"There was one murder (Pune techie killing) in Maharashtra. What has the Modi government got to do with it?" Uddhav wondered.

"Pawar should know that Modi government was not in power when (Ajmal) Kasab and others attacked Mumbai," he said.

Uddhav claimed that NCP minister Jitendra Awhad who is close to Pawar, doesn't allow police to act against goons in Mumbra-Kalwa area in Thane as the culprits belong to a specific religious community.

On Saeed blaming Modi for the Karachi airport attack, Uddhav said he should remember that Tehrik-e-Taliban has claimed responsibility for it.

In a veiled attack on the Centre's ruling party, Pawar had on Sunday said "communal fever" was spreading after BJP came to power.

"Fifteen days have passed since BJP came to power with absolute majority and a communal fever is spreading. Communal violence rocked some places in the state and a young professional was killed," Pawar told a meeting of NCP workers, while referring to the killing of techie Mohsin Shaikh at Pune last week allegedly by rightwing Hindu Rashtra Sena.

"This has not happened before. Certain ideologies which were lying low all these years are now raising their heads and some sections of the society are living in fear," he had said.

New Delhi, Aug 7: The Congress on Thursday demanded the removal of Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa from the cabinet and his arrest for his statement that grand Krishna and Vishwanath temples would come up in Mathura and Kashi respectively after "liberating" them.

Mr Eshwarappa made the statement while reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the foundation of the Ram temple in Ayodhya yesterday.

"By asking kar sevaks (volunteers) to launch a similar campaign, the minister (Eshwarappa) is trying to disturb peace in the society," Congress Karnataka unit chief DK Shivakumar said at a press conference in Ballari today.

"Such people should be arrested immediately, police officials should register a case against him and the Chief Minister should remove him from the cabinet,"he said.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj minister Eshwarappa had said on Wednesday that he was of the firm opinion that "if not today, tomorrow, Mathura and Kashi temples will be liberated and grand temples would be built there."

"A place of devotion has to be built in both Kashi and Mathura. There too, grand temples have to be constructed. The mosques have to be removed from there," he said.

Mr Eshwarappa, a former BJP state president, said the centres of Hindu belief, Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura were a kind of a symbol of "slavery" as "temples of our Rama, Krishna and Vishwanath were destroyed and mosques built."

Stating that Mr Eshwarappa is not an individual but a minister who represents the government, Mr Shivakumar on Thursday sought to know from the Chief Minister whether this was his government's stand.

Mumbai, Jul 16: Poet-activist Varavara Rao has tested positive for Covid-19. The 80-year old, named as accused in the Elgar Parishad case, was shifted to state-run JJ Hospital from Taloja central jail where he was lodged after he complained of dizziness. The hospital conducted tests including one for Covid-19 the results for which confirmed that he is positive.

Dr Ranjit Mankeshwar, the dean of JJ Hospital said, “He has shown no symptoms of Covid-19 so far. He has no breathing difficulty and is stable. We will soon shift him to a Covid hospital.” Rao is likely to be shifted to St George hospital.

Last week, Rao’s family had held a press conference after receiving a call from him from prison. His family had then said that his condition was deteriorating and he should be provided immediate medical aid. He was earlier shifted to the hospital when he fell unconscious in jail in May but was discharged within three days. The family had said that he was not provided proper medical treatment.

Last month, a special court had rejected his interim bail plea where he had cited his susceptibility to the virus due to his age and other medical conditions. The court, however, had said the superintendent of prison has been directed to take appropriate measures in such cases where medical attention is required. Before he was shifted to the hospital on Tuesday, Rao was admitted to the hospital ward of the jail and as he had been unable to do basic chores without depending on other inmates.

An appeal against the special court’s order is pending before the Bombay High Court. The plea is likely to be heard tomorrow.
