Udupi: 2 injured as drone crashes during Krishna Leelotsava

Udupi, Sept 17: Two devotees suffered injured when a camera carrying drone crashed on them on Car Street near Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi during Krishna Leelotsava held as part of Krishna Janmashtami.

The incident took place around 3pm on Friday. Thousands were participating in the procession when a camera-fitted drone crashed on a middleaged devotee from over 100 feet.

A witness said, "The devotee collapsed to the ground, with serious injuries on his neck and face. Fellow devotees rushed him to the hospital." The injured man, from Doddanagudde, is reported to be out of danger.

Another person is reported to have sustained minor injuries. Udupi superintendent of police Sanjeev M Patil said: "No one has lodged a complaint yet. If anyone files a complaint, we will initiate action."

Police sources said a private agency had deployed the drone to get aerial shots of the Vitla Pindi procession, where Lord Krishna's childhood pranks, including breaking earthen pots containing curd and butter, are enacted. The drone is suspected to have crashed because of low battery.

Sources said drones are used extensively for photography for private events, including weddings, in the coastal region.

Thiruvanthapuram, Feb 21: Rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been accused of sexual abuse by another nun. Police sources say that there is at least one more nun who has given a statement of sexual assault against the bishop.

This nun is a witness in the rape case registered against Franco Mulakkal. She is the 14th witness in the case and in her statement, she said that the bishop made sexually-colored and lewd remarks to her over the phone.

As per the nun, they were in communication via phone calls, chat and video calls for a period of two years from 2015 to 2017.

In the statement, the nun said that she kept quiet as she was scared of the bishop.

In her witness statement in September 2018, she said that in 2017, the bishop visited the convent she was in and hugged and kissed her.

Police say that the witness was not ready to file a complaint against the bishop. They had alerted the police in the jurisdiction and when the team met her, she refused to file a complaint. Hence a separate case wasn't registered against Bishop Franco

The first nun of Missionaries of Jesus had accused Franco of raping her multiple times at the Kuruvilangadu convent in Kottayam. The FIR in the case was registered in June 2018.

Then after protests, Franco was arrested on September 21, 2018.

The chargesheet in the case was submitted in April 2019. In the chargesheet, Bishop Franco Mullackal has been charged under various sections of the IPC: 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (2k) (rape on a woman incapable of giving consent), 376 (2n) (causing grievous bodily harm during rape), 376 (c) (a) 377 (unnatural offence) and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation).

Kasaragod, Mar 23: With 19 more positive cases reported on Monday, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the district.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to 38 in Kasaragod.

Manjeshwar, Aug 3: In a horrific incident, a man hacked four of his relatives to death at Bayar near Kaniala Gurukumeri in Manjeshwar taluk of Kasaragod district.

According to police, Udaya (40), a resident of Sudanbala, killed three of his maternal uncles and a maternal aunt who were staying together at a house at around 7:30 p.m. today. 

The deceased have been identified as Sadashiv (54), Vittal (52), Babu (50), and maternal Revati (58).

Locals caught him and handed him over to the police after tying his hands and legs. 

A preliminary investigation revealed that a familial clash led to the gruesome murder. A police team led by Kasargod DSP Balakrishnan are investigating the matter.
