Udupi: 96-year-old dies in note exchange queue before a bank

Udupi, Nov 12: A 96-year-old man collapsed and died in a queue at a village in Udupi district as cash-strapped common people in the region continued to throng banks and ATM counters for withdrawal of some money to meet their daily expenses on Saturday.

Gopal Shetty (96), a resident of Ajekar village was standing in the before a branch of Corporation bank for exchanging currency. Around 12 noon he collapsed and died on the spot.

It is said that he had only a few notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denomination but waited in queue for a long time.

Though he was rushed to a nearby clinic by some people who saw him collapse, he was declared dead, sources said.

The deceased is the father of Sudhakar Shetty, founder of Jnana Sudha educational institution of Karkala.

See, poors will have to suffer, riches have already shifted their amounts 'to foreign countries.....they are safe....poor's had some amount of hard earned money that they will have to lose for unwanted reason....the curse of these people will surely fall on these bloody useless politicians....

I haven't seen any politicians standing in line in front of banks to withdraw money....why why why....have they been given a chance of exchanging their money earlier than the announcement, public needs to know.....this is very bad...

people should teach them nice lesson in next election....

Bengaluru, May 25: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that lashed Bengaluru last evening left hundreds of trees uprooted near the BTM layout and other areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a thunderstorm accompanied with lightning in Karnataka for the next five days.

"Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at will prevail at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe and Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal," the IMD said its All Indian Weather Forecast Bulletin.

According to the forecasting agency, due to strong southerly wind from the Bay of Bengal to northeast India at lower tropospheric levels, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls likely at isolated places over parts of northeastern states.

In addition to that heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over adjoining parts of east India during 24th-28th. "Heavy rainfall at isolated places over parts south peninsular India from May 26th-28th, 2020," the IMD said its All Indian Weather Forecast Bulletin.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: Former Union minister and senior Congress leader K H Muniyappa on Wednesday extended his support to former Prime minister and JD(S) National president H D Deve Gowda in the Rajya Sabha polls.

In a statement issued here here, Mr Muniyappa said that party which had an electoral understanding in the Lok Sabha elections, may extend support to Gowda in the June-19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka.

It may be recalled that the Election Commission of India, is conducting elections to Rajya Sabya to fill four vacancies from the Karnataka Assembly, in which the ruling BJP may bag two seats, while the remaining may be won by the Congress and the JD(S).

Kannur, Jun 21: Customs sleuths on Sunday seized 432 grams of gold worth around Rs 20 lakh from a passenger who arrived at Kannur International Airport from Dubai in Fly Dubai flight, scheduled under Vande Bharat Mission.

Customs Assistant Commissioner E Vikas-led team seized the smuggled gold from the passenger Usman of Malappuram district and detained him, sources said.

The seized gold was kept in his inner-wear.
