Udupi academicians visit Israel over Student Satellite programme

Udupi, Jun 7: Niranjan Chiplunkar, principal of the Udupi-based NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT) and Parameswaran, Director, Industry Institute Interaction, NMAMIT, visited Israel, under the Indo-Israel Space Tech Leadership Programme, organised by the Indian Technical Congress Association (ITCA) between May 26 and May 30.

A press release issued by NMAMIT here on Thursday said that there were 20 members in the visiting team, from different technical Institutes of India. Indian Technical Congress Association president Murali Krishna Reddy accompanied the team.

The team visited Nano-satellite Centre of Tel Aviv University, Herziliya Science Centre, Israel Space Agency and Image Sat International and Agriculture Research Organisation at Volcani Centre. The purpose of the visit was to get first-hand information about the Student Satellite programme of Israel.

Indian Technical Congress Association is coordinating design, development and launch of 75 satellites to be developed by students of engineering institutes in India by 2022, which is the 75th year of Indian Independence.

NMAMIT is participating in this programme. The visit helped the team to get a broad picture of a similar programme in Israel, the release said.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: A youth was killed and three others injured as a pillar of an old temple on the outskirts of Bengaluru fell on them as they and five others dug under it in search of treasure, police said on Saturday.

"One treasure hunter got crushed under a pillar, three suffered injuries and have been hospitalised while five are on the run," a police official said.

The incident occurred at a centuries-old Anjaneya temple in Hindiganala village near Hoskote, around 50 km away from the city, on Thursday night.

Suresh, 23, got crushed to death while Manjunath, 23, Srinivas, 22, and Sebastian Raja Rathna, 22, were injured.

Following the unexpected accident, the injured treasure hunters called a 108 ambulance, leading to the entire incident coming to light.

The ambulance staff helped the youth stuck under the temple pillars and took them to hospital.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Ancient Monuments Act, the Karnataka Treasure Trove Act, and the Indian Penal Code.

According to the official, local youth the village as well as a nearby village were involved in the hunt.

Police are on the lookout for the five treasure hunters on the run.

However, the police official said that it was an old ruined temple and there was nothing there.

Mangaluru, May 6: Amidst preparation for the paid evacuation of Indians stuck in Gulf countries amidst coronavirus lockdown, the central government has announced that it would only do a medical screening of the passengers before the flight and only asymptomatic persons would be allowed to travel.

Each passenger will have to fill a self-reporting form to be presented at the health and immigration counter at their destination.

The passengers are required to state whether they are suffering from fever, cough, diabetes or any respiratory disease. This form is similar to the one filled by passengers landing in India during the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As per the announcement by the government, returnees would undergo COVID-19 once they complete 14-day quarantine in a hospital or government –arranged institution on a payment basis.

However, the form asks the applicants to keep themselves isolated at home for 28 days unless they develop any symptoms such as fever and cough.

During the journey, they will have to follow the protocols such as those issued by the Health Ministry and the Civil Aviation Ministry. Applicants from the UAE are yet to receive instructions on these.

On reaching the destination, passengers will have to register on the Arogya Setu app, India’s mobile application for COVID-19 surveillance.

No physical distancing!

Air India Express (AIE) which is set to operate the first two flights to Kerala on Thursday will operate its Boeing 737-800 flights, with a seating capacity of 186 economy class seats.

With nine seats reserved for isolation, only 177 passengers would be flown, sources said.

While most of the UAE flights in the first week will be operated by the AIE, Air India will operate two of its Dreamliner aircraft with a seating capacity of 256 seats. These flights would also reserve some seats for isolation.

However, the plan has made it clear that the Indian government will not be following the rules of physical distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the repatriation flights.

Several people, including the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed concern over flying passengers, who will not be tested for COVID-19, without observing physical distancing.

Mangaluru, May 17: With the detection of two more covid-19 positive cases in Mangaluru, the total number of cases in Dakshina Kannada today mounted to 52.

A 35-year-old woman who was under quarantine along with her husband after returning from Maharashtra today tested positive for the coronavirus. 

A 31-year-old man also tested positive for covid-19.  More details to follow.
