Udupi, Dec 16: The state government has released Rs 1 crore to the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) for closing potholes and repairing roads for the forthcoming Paryaya festival, said district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj.

He was chairing a preparatory meeting for the festival at the District Offices Complex, here. Heads of government departments and office bearers of the Paryaya Reception Committee participated in the meeting.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that all the roads in the city should be free of potholes by December 30. “The city should look clean and beautiful for the Paryaya festival,” he said.

Raghavendra Acharya, working president of the Paryaya Reception, urged the administration to allow the ‘Pura Pravesha’ procession on January 3 and the Paryaya festival procession on January 18 to proceed on the same route.

Mr. Madhwaraj directed the officials of the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. (MESCOM) and BSNL to see that no wires obstructed the tableaux on the route of the procession. There should be no tableau of above 16 feet, he said.

So too, the permission of the CMC and police department should be taken for putting up banners, hoardings and buntings on the roads. At the same time, the departments should give permission for such banners, buntings and hoardings within 24 hours, he said.

Officers should take appropriate action to see that there was proper healthcare, water supply and electricity supply during the Paryaya festival.

The Tourism Department should coordinate with the Karnataka State Tourism Department (KSTDC) and organise special tour packages for the Paryaya, Mr. Madhwaraj said. The CMC should take measure to see that there were proper toilet arrangements during the festival. The street lamps should function properly during the festival.

Maintenance of cleanliness should be given priority and there should be proper disposal of wet waste. The Reception Committee should give the list of VIPs who would be participating in the festival in advance, Mr. Madhwaraj said.

Mangaluru, Jan 10: Two members of a notorious honey-trap gang that used to lure rich men using women and then extort money from them by staging fake police raid have been arrested by the Dakshina Kannada district police.

Lohith, a resident of Kushalnagara, and Sharif from Vittal, were arrested in connection with a honey-trap case registered in Uppinangady police station. Jamal, Jeevan and Naushad, who were also involved in the case, are absconding.

Police said they received information that a few people under the guise of being Kerala police, were planning to raid a resort near Uppinangady where two couples were staying.

They were informed that they would threaten and try to extort money from them. The police were tipped off about the same by their counterparts in Kerala.

Police said the accused are experts in setting honeytraps, and were involved in similar crimes since a long time. Their modus operandi was to use two women from Mangaluru to lure their intended targets.

Once they trap their target, the woman and victim are sent to resorts. They then raid the resort posing as police officials, and click pictures in compromising positions of the victim with the woman.

They threaten to release the pictures on social media or TV channels, if they fail to pay up.

Police said the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from each victim, but they denied to pay up. Irked by this, the accused took away the victims’ belongings such as phone, money and car.

The victims who believed that the accused were police personnel, asked them to take them to the police station. Instead of taking them to the police, the accused took them to a secluded place, where they claimed that they were putting the victims under house arrest. Police have seized an SUV from the accused.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should issue strict orders to the police in Delhi to act in nation's interest and control the ongoing violence.

"Distressing scenes in Delhi!! #DelhiBurning as a result of ulterior motives of divisive forces within our Country. Police have completely failed in their responsibility. People have to remain calm and promote peace in the area for their own benefit," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"Seven people dead and hundreds are injured, Amit Shah should issue strict orders to police to act in nation's interest and not in the interest of few people. As Gandhiji said, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Peace and harmony should be our moto," he added.
Siddaramaiah further stated that the "triggering point of the #DelhiViolence seems to be the inciting speech of BJP leader Kapil Mishra."

"This actually qualifies for a sedition case as it was aimed at disturbing national peace and security. Police have to arrest him and bring normalcy in Delhi," he wrote.

Siddaramaiah has further asked Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to be careful "before situation goes out of hand."

"Delhi riots are in front of eyes. There will be tough situation here in state as well if those loose tongue leaders in BJP are not stopped in the state," he wrote.
As many as 18 people have lost their lives and around 190 are injured in the violence that has been raging in parts of North-East Delhi from Monday.
