Udupi Bishop inaugurates star-shaped St Francis Assisi Church in Kundapura

Udupi, May 13: The newly built St Francis Assisi Church was inaugurated at Tallur near Kundapura in Udupi district on Thursday. The star-shaped church is said to be the first of its kind in the State.

Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese, inaugurated the church by cutting the ribbon and unveiling the plaque.

Later speaking at a public function organized to mark the inauguration, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, recalled the contribution of Christians in various fields and said Catholic institutions had played a prominent role in the development of the nation by promoting quality education.

He lauded their role in promoting education and healthcare in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Presiding over the function, Dr. Lobo said places of worship had a distinct place in Indian culture. He complemented the parish priest and people of Tallur for their efforts in erecting such a beautiful church building within a short period.

Mangaluru, April 3: A police officer in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district got injured on Friday after unidentified youth pelted stones at him.

The incident took place when the cop stopped them from entering into the state from Kerala in the view of nationwide lockdown. He was later administered medical aid.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: A 23-year-old youth has been booked under the POCSO Act on charges of abduction and sexual abuse of a minor girl.

Police said on Wednesday day that the accused identified as Aneesh Dias, a resident of Chikkamadnur has reportedly gone absconding. The victim, who hails from Puttur, is a I PU college student.

The victim's parents had filed a missing complaint with Puttur Rural police as their daughter did not return home after leaving home for college. The police investigating the complaint traced the girl.

Mangaluru, June 20: A teenage boy lost his life after accidentally drowning in Netravati River at Boliyar village on the outskirts of the city yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Fazil (15), a resident of Nadupadavu village near Konaje. 

According to his family sources, Fazil had been to work in a horticultural land along with his friends on Saturday afternoon. 

On his way back he went to the river to wash his hands and legs. However, he lost his balance in the river and drowned, police sources said.

His body was retrieved at 2 p.m. A case was registered at jurisdictional Konaje police station.
