Udupi, Nov 19: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday formally inaugurated the renovated and renamed Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdulla Maternity and Children’s Hospital near Chittaranjan Circle in Udupi.

The district maternity and children’s hospital is a part of the Udupi’s district government hospital. However, while the district government hospital is located at Ajjarkad, the district government maternity and children’s hospital was located some distance away. Philanthropist the late Haji Abdulla had donated land for both the hospitals to governments six decades ago.

Speaking on the occasion, Siddaramaiah said that though the hospital would be run by the BRS Health and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., owned by NRI businessman B.R. Shetty, its full control will be with the district administration. “This is not privatisation of the hospital,” he claimed.

Opposition to ‘privatization’

The Save District Government Maternity and Children’s Hospital Committee has questioned the haste in the inauguration of the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdulla Maternity and Children’s Hospital.

Addressing presspersons, Yogish Shet, committee member, said that the District Government Maternity and Children’s Hospital has been rendering good service.

But the government, in 2016, decided to allow the BRS Health and Research Institute, owned by B.R. Shetty to construct a maternity and children’s hospital, a super-speciality hospital and an urban community health centre. These will come up on four acres of land where the Government Maternity and Children’s Hospital is located.

P.V. Bhandary, committee member, sought to know how funds from the super-specialty hospital would be used to cross-subsidise the Maternity and Children’s hospital.

“What is the hurry to inaugurate the hospital when its construction was not fully completed? Was it because the Model Code of Conduct would become effective in three months? How many medical and paramedical personnel appointed for the hospital?” he asked.

Bantwal, Jul 24: Former Union Minister B Janardhan Poojary on Friday said that people need to shed all their misconception regarding COVID-19 and stop taking it so lightly as it is not just any normal disease.

The 83-year-old politician who was tested positive for covid-19, was recently discharged from hospital after recovering completely.

Giving a word of caution, he said, “Earlier also there have been several diseases like Covid-19 and it has been eradicated. Even covid-19 will be eradicated. So, people should not get scared of the disease instead must fight with it”

“Also, covid-19 patients must not be treated like untouchables as those with symptoms may also not mention it due to the fear of being treated badly,” he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.

Ballari, Apr 18: Hosapete town in Ballari district of Karnataka gasped in disbelief as it turned out that 11 members of one single family are positive for the coronavirus.

The whole town has been declared a containment zone and is being surveilled 24X7.

The family includes seven members whose tests returned positive today, three who tested Covid-19 positive on March 30 and one other member subsequently.

The seven who tested positive today had been negative when they were earlier tested along with the others.

They have all now been shifted to isolation wards at the District Hospital in Ballari.

Including this family of 11, Ballari has 13 positive cases so far, with one case each reported from Ballari and Siraguppa towns.

Startled by this sudden upsurge from Hosapete, the district administration has set up 16 fever clinics to screen people and six COVID care centres to treat positive cases. There are two dedicated COVID hospitals, one at Ballari and another at Torangallu in Sandur.

A team of psychological counsellors have been put on duty to provide support to the patients at the isolation centres.
