Udupi, Sept 6: The police stopped Mangalaru Chalo motorcycle rally by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers in Kundapur, Hemmady and Hebri in Udupi district on Wednesday. The police took the leaders and workers of the party into preventive custody and later released them.
Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, said that a motorcycle rally with 75 motorcycles was attempted at Hemmady by the BJP. The police detained 105 workers and later released them. In Kundapur, the rally was attempted with 86 motorcycles. The police detained 110 workers and then released them.
So too in Hebri, at a rally with 40 motorcycles, 101 workers were detained and later released. The total number of workers taken into preventive custody was 316. As many as 201 motorcycles were seized, he said.
These workers along with their party leaders were detained for violating prohibitory order on motorcycle rallies in the district, which are in force till 6 a.m. on Saturday. The motorcycle rally from these three places was expected to culminate in Mangaluru, where too it has been banned.
The BJP Yuva Morcha has planned Mangaluru Chalo motorcycle rally against the murder of 18 right-wing activists, and seeking resignation of Minister for Forests and Environment B. Ramanath Rai.
In Kundapur, Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLC, led the Mangaluru Chalo rally, which began near Kundeshwar Temple, before it was rounded up by the police near Shastri Circle.
In Hemmady, the rally began under the leadership of Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, president of the district unit of the BJP, from Hemmady Circle, and the police stopped it near Jayashri Hall.
In Hebri, V. Sunil Kumar, Karkala MLA, led the motorcycle rally and the police stopped the protesters after some distance.
