Udupi, Mar 31: The police seized 11 head of cattle and three dead calves that were being illegally transported, at Nanchar village coming under Kota police station limits in Kundapur taluk of Udupi yesterday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team headed by SI Rafee M was waiting at Kolkebail Junction at around 1.30 a.m., when a motorcycle arrived from Kaimail at 1.45 a.m.

When the motorcycle rider and pillion rider saw the police vehicle, they stopped at a distance, abandoned the two-wheeler, and escaped into the forest.

An SUV, which came behind the motorcycle, was signalled to stop.

The SUV driver first slowed down and then jumped from the running vehicle and escaped into the forest. Driverless, the SUV fell into a ditch.

When the police went to investigate, 14 head of cattle heads tied with nylon ropes were found in the vehicle.

Of them, three had already died. The total value of the cattle is estimated at Rs. 46,000. The police seized them and the motorcycle, and the SUV.

The police suspect that the motorcycle riders and the driver and the owner of the SUV had stolen the head of cattle and were transporting them without any permit. The cattle had been shifted to a cattle protection centre at Neelavar. A case had been registered and investigation is on, the police said.
